High tech combat in Civilization: Beyond Earth

CIV BE

I’ve been quite lucky – I’ve seen demos and even gotten my hands on the upcoming Civilization: Beyond Earth. Now, Firaxis is showing off what I’ve seen behind closed doors on YouTube, and it really is quite something.

For those who aren’t into watching videos, we get a rundown of the Purity Affinity, the belief that humans should remain as they are without getting cybernetic upgrades or melding with aliens. In the example shown, the civilization has terra-formed the new planet and is in the process of eliminating dangerous alien life forms, as well as dangerous alternate civilizations. It shows off the technical side of combat and gives an excellent indications of where you will probably be by the mid to end game. Plus, it just looks really pretty.

Looking at this, it’s interesting to see how the military experience will play out – satellites are useful tools and the units are completely different to anything we’ve seen in previous Civilization games. I never really go for the war route in Civilization – sometimes, once my tech is advanced enough, I will nuke all the enemy civilizations, but usually I’m more of a pacifist. Do you think you will be fighting everything on the planet, destroying all your opponents, or will your affinity mean that you can actually make friends with the aliens? I’m really curious to see how I naturally tend. I thought that I would probably lean towards becoming friendly with aliens (Harmony Affinity), but the Supremacy Affinity also seems rather intriguing.

Oh, who am I kidding – I will probably play through all the affinities many times and still find something new to do. Cultural game with Supremacy Affinity, or the Tech approach with Harmony… everything seems to be possible and I just can’t wait to try it all myself.

I play Civ as if I am cooperating, borders stay CLOSED, trade is sort of open, mundane alliances, and then INVASION!

Talking about mundane alliances…I will have you know I just finished ME1 last night! Pretty epic ending, that last fight was freaking hectic! Had to play it 3 times…but I think I was more irritated by the unskippable cut scenes!

I tried importing! It couldn’t find my saved games…but I’m still in early stages so I could try again and start over. Is it worth it?

All your decisions in the 1st one play out in the sequels, Did you let the Krogan live or die, who did you send to death in battle, Ashley or kaiden. Did you let the council live or die? Oh, and you get a nice XP bonus at the start. The default save game location for ME1 is “My DocumentsBioWareMass EffectSave”.

It really is the worst! I just narrowly died every time and I want to jump in immediately to avenge myself, but then NO. Let’s look at this 2min cut scene again. Bloody hell.

Is it really worth it to import? Because I tried importing but the game couldn’t find my saves… so I started new. But I’m still only about 1-2 hours in, so I could always restart if it is really worth it!

See my post above. And also, for me I like the idea of continuity. I’d feel a bit kuk after a few hrs realizing that I’m making decisions now that will affect the 3rd game’s play aswell. I’d go back and start a new game with the import. You’ll still have your other profile saved.

Back when I first played Alpha Centauri (I would have been about 10) I always tried to ally with the aliens and achieve a (mostly) peaceful victory.

I love the Civilization games. I can get lost for hours playing the games. Civ 5 is close to perfect. This new space direction, idk, I don’t like it. It looks like Civ 5 with a paint job. I don’t know why everything is turning into space and aliens. I will just have to wait for this shit to be over with. What comes after space and aliens, where do they go next. World War 2 games again.
