Horizon Zero Dawn side quests

Horizon: Zero Dawn is one of my more anticipated games over the next few months, primarily because of how different it looks. Running around as Aloy and hunting down mechanical wildlife looks engrossing, while the world that Guerrilla Games is building will seek to keep that splendour alive for as long as possible. Just like any open-world game, story missions can only go so far, so there’re a few other distractions that Horizon will throw your way.

Game Informer has taken a peek into the more enticing side quest offerings that Horizon: Zero Dawn will have, and most of then stick in line with the tribalism setting that the game is trying to convey. This isn’t more evident than in Tribe Quests, where Aloy takes on missions from other tribes scattered in the valley to increase her understanding of how other humans are surviving. These new tribes will have to survive in different climates and danger zones, which will vary the missions Aloy can take from them.

Sticking with human contact, Aloy can also undertake hunting challenges from a sort of Hunter’s Guild that exists throughout the world. That means going toe to toe with some of the game’s nastiest mechanical creatures, all in the pursuit of reward and high standing in the guild. There are also challenges pertaining to the way Aloy is allowed to kill her prey, which might have you experimenting with tools you’d rather leave alone.

That will come in handy if you choose to tackle Corruption Zones – Horizon’s very own form of area control points that are commonplace in open-world games. These areas are filled with hostile creatures, and Guerrilla says they’ll make up some of the bigger fits in the title. Clearing these sections out keeps them safe for good, while also netting you a healthy dose of experience. Since that’s what gets you new abilities, Corruption Zones might be integral to your progression.

Those are just three of the bigger side activities available to players in February, with Horizon’s world still throwing up dynamic quests here and there to keep you on your toes. It’s a game I can’t wait to try for myself, when it launches on PS4 next February.

  1. Does helping other villages grant you additional “Alloys”?

Ah! There it is… side quests! The thing that will cause me to play a game for an absurd amount of time!

Aren’t they the same thing? Go to A and collect B… Disable/Kill X number of Y… Cleanse area E of what’s corruption it… I mean, as long as they’re done well, then it may not immediately give the feeling of repetition, but… that’s all it is.

Doesn’t mean I’m still not excited for this game. It looks good, and I like the concept… but, yeah, side quests just hide a repetitive cycle behind an illusion of doing something new… but it doesn’t keep it from being a repetitive cycle. :/ And if the lore with the other tribes and everything else is good, that just adds to making doing the side quests better, IMO, but I’ve always been interested in game world lore. *shrug*
