Horizon Zero Dawn could sell 6 million units this year

Ck7G9LyWYAADWwnHorizon Zero Dawn is out on 28 February in the US, and a day later in much of the rest of the world – including here at the southern tip of Africa. According to most critics, it’s an amazing open world experience. Yes, it may borrow heavily from games like Far Cry and The Witcher 3 – but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

With its strong critical reception, it’s likely to have an equally strong commercial one. According to SuperData, it could end up being one of PlayStation’s pillars – joining games like Uncharted, God of War and other marquee games.

“Horizon Zero Dawn is strong strategic move by Sony as competitors move in. The release of Horizon Zero Dawn is a key moment for Sony’s PlayStation, because hardware sales have been softening for Sony and the company is increasingly going to rely on successful game releases,” said SuperData CEO Joost van Dreunen.

According to van Dreunen, the game should end up selling 4-6 million units this year and a total of 6-8 million units in its lifetime. For a new IP, that would be quite incredible.

At this stage in the respective consoles lifetimes, it’s going to come down to software sales to generate profit.

“Now that we are in the second half of the current console cycle it forces Sony and its rival Microsoft into a price war for the more risk-averse consumers that typically enter the market at this stage. And the release of the Nintendo Switch in early March will further increase the pressure on Sony to remain the platform of choice for the current gamer generation.”

And Sony seems to be handling that pressure well. We’re not even in to the third month of the year and already the PlayStation 4 is home to three must-have blockbuster exclusives in Yakuza-O, Nioh and now Horizon Zero Dawn.
