How big is the Witcher 3’s world map?

The witcher 3 wild hunt

The Witcher 3 is a big game. It will offer over 200 hours of gameplay to completionists while those who just pursue the story can probably knock off 50 hours from that time. But any game can pad out the experience and have you retrace your steps a million times. Not so with The Witcher 3.

Some people wonder why the size of the world matters. What’s the point of an enormous map if there isn’t much to do? Or if that world feels dead and empty? However, that world is very much alive, as shown in the gameplay video we looked at earlier today. But how big is the map? Rather large.

What a shame, I know CD Projekt Red wanted to do something big and fun for the map reveal. Instead, it was leaked thanks to a Gamespot pre-order exclusive and is visible right here:

Witcher 3 world map

Touting its gigantic world, The Witcher 3 website says:

Sail through open seas, dive in search of long lost artifacts or gallop your mount into combat—the world of the Witcher beckons to be explored. Visit the luxurious and corrupt city of Novigrad, face the frigid cold of the wind-swept Skellige islands, and challenge the dark forces roaming the forlorn, war-ravaged No Man’s Land. While on the road, use your special witcher senses to hunt down ferocious monsters and earn gold. Do anything you want, anytime you want!

Looking at the full world map doesn’t really give an adequate sense of scale without some perspective. Here is a small map (from an early build) of just Crookback Bog found on NeoGAF.

Witcher 3 world map crookback bog

As you can see, even a smaller part of the map has a ton of detail and loads to do. Just imagine how busy Novigrad will be in the finished product. I will definitely need to use lots of fast travel and stay on good old Roach more than usual – it will take ages just to get around, let alone check out all the things.

Precisely! It would turn into a text adventure – you fast travel and, upon arrival, a textbox pops up stating “Welcome back. Whilst you were gone, the Griffon ate all the forest inhabitants, thus killing your only source of information as to the whereabouts of the Wild Hunt… Game Over!”

Ok, just typing that made me sad… Who fast travels, I mean honestly.

You know, gamers, who after an extended period of time of playing an open-world game extensively exploring almost every nook and cranny within the world, beginning to feel that the game world is feeling a little dull and would rather finish an objective as quick as possible rather than go through unnecessary backtracking.

It was one of the main flaws of Dragon’s Dogma.

The sheer scope of this game, together with acceptable horseback fighting, stylish finishers and a neat look dodge system pleases me immensely! All we need now is for the story element to be gold and we’ve surely got a GOTY on our hands.

I would’ve liked an actual square kilometer (or mile for the muggles) size to get a nice idea. They did that with GTA V and Skyrim before release.

If memory serves me, they said a while back (like last year sometime) that the map will be bigger than Skyrim… Never gave an exact amount, but that statement alone was enough to get me all excited! And yes, I shall abandon all fast traveling!!

I am scared that the game is too big… But it does seem that only I have these type of fears!! Far Cry 4 was too big for me and had too much random things to do!! I played and finished The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, now that is a good game and only 8,5 hours long but if you ask me what game I remember in 10 years time between Far Cry 4 and The Vanishing of Ethan Carter then Ethan Carter’s tale will win hands down!!

I was a happy gamer when a game lasted 10 hours but you would remember the story till you die, case and point Resident Evil 2… I still love that game and it is still my favourite game!!

I can agree with that. I do enjoy a great story, no matter how short the game. But sometimes I like to just wander and explore – get lost in a different world.
