How does Dragon Age: Inquisition's Co-op work?

DAI MP

Bioware made their “surprise” announcement yesterday about Dragon Age: Inquisition having a co-op multiplayer component. In actual fact, this isn’t too much of a surprise, especially considering it sounds rather similar to Mass Effect 3’s multiplayer – just without any impact on the single player campaign.

The multiplayer in Dragon Age: Inquisition will not include any PvP – it’s all about the co-op. Playing cooperatively, players battle through Diablo-esque dungeons on a quest for epic loot. While the missions have a loose connection to the campaign, the real storytelling is reserved for single-player.

In multiplayer, you’re actually working for the Inquisitor, running operations with a squad behind the scenes. Creative Director Mike Laidlaw stressed that the characters used for these multiplayer matches are still characters:

One of the things that came out of early explorations is that we wanted the multiplayer characters to be characters. They’re kind of like mini followers, and they banter among themselves.

You can choose to play as one of the three core classes: Mage, Melee, Archer. Each of these paths must be leveled up on their own – you might get an awesome new axe or bow, but that will mean starting as a level one character again. It’s all about leveling up your characters to unlock cool new skills and abilities, and of course, it’s all about the loot. Nine heroes will be available at launch, three for each class 12 heroes will be available at launch, four for each class (just because IGN had the exclusive on this doesn’t mean that they gave the correct info), each with unique appearance, abilities and characterization.

While there is the option to pay for Platinum, it’s an “optional time saver” and isn’t pay to win. It simply unlocks the new classes for you, instead of forcing you to play in order to unlock them. Described as similar to League of Legends, I’m hoping that it’s true and that we don’t see some people who are completely maxed out in multiplayer as a result of paying in the necessary cash. I’m sad that this is part of the game – I know it’s the way of the future, but I can’t help but feel like this is Bioware fulfilling an EA requirement to include micro transactions.

Players can break down unused equipment to gain crafting materials for new pieces of equipment, adding to the loot loop. Added to this are personal Prestige accomplishments which include killing a certain number of enemies – these can unlock new character icons, banners and cosmetic pieces. Plus, there are weekly Operations; these are global events that the entire player-base works towards such as killing one million demons by a specific date.

Multiplayer sounds difficult and could be fun. Bioware did such a good job with the multiplayer in ME3, I’m hoping that they will make this co-op mode equally entertaining. That said, I doubt I will dip into this too much, especially if it doesn’t impact on the single player campaign. If I’m not trying to increase some form of “Inquisitor readiness” by playing with others, I’d rather just play on my own.

Mmmm. Interesting. So anything you do in the multiplayer cannot be transferred to your single player character? Or am I misunderstanding something? It’s a pretty cool implementation though

Though I am a bit worried about the paying aspect if I dont feel they’re making it hard to unlock classes just so that you must pay, I’ll be cool. But this is EA so….yeah I remain cautious
