How many gamers tuned in for the LoL World Championship 2014?

League of Legends is easily the most popular and most watched eSport, especially when it comes to the World Championships. Riot Games have recently released statistics following this year’s competition. Fewer people watched the final overall, but that’s hardly a negative. Every other stat seems to have been improved significantly.

The World Championships for 2014 spanned 15 days and had over 100 hours of content. It was broadcast in 19 languages through 40 broadcast partners. Here are the numbers Mason, taken from the Riot website (via Games Industry)

  • 288 million cumulative daily unique impressions
  • 179 million hours watched across the world (up from last year’s 70 million)
  • Peak concurrent viewers during the final was 11.2 million (up from 8.7 million in 2013)
  • Overall total unique viewer count for finals was 27 million (down from 32 million last year)
  • Average view time for the final was 67 minutes (a climb from 42 minutes the year before)

That really is positive overall. fewer people may have watched the final, but those who did, did so for a lot longer. Riot are quite happy with the results.

“It’s awesome to see fans enjoying Worlds as a community, whether it’s with 40,000 friends cheering together in Sangam Stadium, or as a group staying up late at a local viewing party halfway across the world. We’re honored by your passion and participation. Thank you for tuning in.”

Even though the finals saw a dip of a whopping 5 million viewers, 27 million is nothing to scoff at. I’m honestly quite surprised that it dropped to be honest. Is this going to be a continuing trend? Will fewer viewers tune in next year? I somehow doubt it.

I watched some of it but not the final, I was otherwise occupied with a romantic weekend away.
