How many gigs did that Eurogamer test take?

So I posted earlier about the latest Eurogamer face off and you may have wondered then how I managed to restrain from talking about my pet hate… those idiotic installs.

Well it’s because I wanted to add them all up and see how much of our 40Gb hard drive space would be taken just by playing the games in the list. The number in brackets is the amount of my life force wasted on waiting for an install.

Soul Calibur 4 – 2.6 GB (14 minutes)
Mercenaries 2- 2.7 GB (5 minutes*)
Beijing 2008 – 1.6 GB (5 minutes)

So grab the calculator… 2.6 + 2.7 = 5.3 + 1.6 = 6.9GB and 24 minutes of your life wasted…

Not bad for a soft lineup, imagine what’s about to happen in the next quarter of gaming.

*How did the Mercenaries install take 1/3rd of the time of the Soul Calibur one to install more data? Weird…

    Lazy,

So how much time did you waste posting the article?

No, wait – how much time did you waste on all your anti-install articles?

    Yawn…

You could, you know, make a phone call or a sandwich while you wait an install.

You could also have been 15min into the game by then.

One of the compelling aspects about a console is that you buy the game, stick it in and play. When you’re done you stick in the next one and play. Not stick it in, install, play, uninstall, stick in the next one, install, play, uninstall… etc etc etc

I cant say I have noticed an install on any game I have played yet other than GTA4, but that takes forever to load everu single time you play!

That is kind of exagerating it a bit, isn’t it?

We can just as well get used to installs. Since DVD drives have probably reached their maximum transfer rates, I can’t see any other way to go come the next gen consoles. (Unless BR exists in a super duper fast drive)

I just wish everybody could accept it, just like we accepted it on PC’s. It is the way forward, just like CD-Roms were over cartridges.

How many games do you play at once to haveta uninstall before you play next one? I will admit though, if I where stuck with a 40Gb drive I would not be happy with the games taking all the space via installs. Thing is I don’t finish games quick and come back to ’em months later and I would like to keep the updates that was downloaded. Luckily I got a 200Gb drive in my PS3 😉
