How much will Direct X 12 help the Xbox One?

Secretsauce

Right now, the Xbox One is struggling to hit the same resolution and frame rate in many games that the PlayStation 4 handles with relative ease. soon though, DirectX 12 will be coming, giving the console a few performance enhancements atop the extra power already unlocked by disabling Kinect. Will it enable the Xbox One to hit that magic 1080p/60fps? Not according to The Witcher devs.

Speaking to Gamingbolt, The Witcher 3’s lead engine programmer Balazs Torok, who one would presume has a fair bit of intimate knowledge on the subject, says that DirectX 12 won’t help all that much,

“I think there is a lot of confusion around what and why DX12 will improve. Most games out there can’t go 1080p because the additional load on the shading units would be too much. For all these games DX12 is not going to change anything,” Balazs explains.

He believes that DirectX 12 will allow developers to push more polygons, but that theyll not be able to shade them, wholly defeating the object.

“They might be able to push more triangles to the GPU but they are not going to be able to shade them, which defeats the purpose. To answer the first question, I think we will see a change in the way graphics programmers will think about their pipelines and this will result in much better systems hopefully.”

At this early stage, the Xbox One seems very much to be this generation’s PlayStation 3; worse multiplatform ports, trickier to use and more expensive. Sony eventually turned sales around with the PS3 thanks largely to the cheaper PlayStation 3 slim, and the advent of PlayStation Plus.

Can Microsoft do the same with the Xbox One?

That makes sense. DX12 / Mantle / etc will only help to reduce CPU load when drawing lots of objects. This doesn’t do anything for GPU load, and increasing the resolution doesn’t (normally) increase CPU load.

You had me at The Witcher 3.

The Witcher 2 looked so good, lighting, shadows, ubersampling. The game was really top notch. Consoles now can only do what The Witcher 2 did years ago, well maybe not ubersampling.

I think CD Projekt RED is still trying to get The Witcher 3 to run at 1080p. If they can’t do it be now….

Anyway enough about the useless Xbox One. I’m sure people will enjoy The Witcher 3 at 900p.

The Witcher 3 is coming, so get to pre-ordering it. And make sure that a lot people you know are aware of The Witcher 3 and make sure they buy The Witcher 3.

How many times do I have to write The Witcher 3 before it sinks in. The Witcher 3 is going to be a good game. The Witcher 3 is going to tell a good story. The Witcher 3 is going to have good graphics. And most importantly, The Witcher 3 won’t have DRM.

Support The Witcher 3 and Support games that truly have no DRM.

Make some Witcher 3 videos and get Darryn to wear it. Or get Zoe to wear it in some videos then people will actually get the message. You guys can do much more by showing off the t-shirt in videos than it hanging on my wall.

They could do 1080@60fps if their engine was better and that the target was user experience instead of fidelity. Sounds more like an excuse by everyone that is not id Software.

The difference in resolution and fraps is insignificant. I don’t care and you shouldn’t either. It’s about the games and content. I’m eager to see what EA Access is going to achieve. Although many think it’s doomed to fail, it’s a great idea and a great offer too. Heres to hoping you can at least play them while offline too (I play my free 360 and One games on any profile. Not just the one with Gold, while online or offline. No problems.)
