Human Revolution’s ending doesn’t really matter to Deus Ex: Mankind Divided

Deus Ex Mankind Divided ignoring past endings

The revitalisation of Deus Ex in Human Revolution was almost perfect. It had immaculate gameplay, some excellent characters and a setting that was drenched in equal parts of promise and dread. It’s bosses were not so fantastic, but the real let-down of the entire thing was the ending. Or endings, as it turned out – with Adam Jensen going full Deus Ex Machina to strike out all the decisions you had made until that point.

Eidos Montreal acknowledge the different ways in which Human Revolution ended, but almost make them entirely irrelevant in the upcoming sequel Mankind Divided. Speaking to PC Gamer, Mary DeMarle, lead writer on both Mankind divided and Human Revolution, explained how some players had become so attached to the endings they had chosen. And how they couldn’t possibly turn around and take that away from them.

Everyone chose their ending and it was a big decision. We had people write to us and say they had half hour discussions with their partner about what they were going to do. We don’t want to rob that from anybody. We realised that there are three people in the world who know what decision was made: Adam Jensen, Eliza, and you, the player.

Of course this presents a few problems going forward. How can all the endings lead to the same storyline that Mankind Divided seeks to kick off? Turns out the trick lies in the perception of the events that transpired at the end of Human Revolution. No one aside from Jensen and a few others actually know what happened. To everyone else, Augmented citizens just “went crazy”.

The thing that is true, that everyone knows, is that millions of augs went crazy and hundreds of millions of people died, and the Panchaea installation got so damaged that it collapsed and people died in it, and then there are rumours.

It’s a clever way to skirt around one of the weakest parts of Human Revolution and not letting it impact the story going forward. And in many ways it works too. The added tension around not knowing what really happened will hopefully be felt by the many NPCs you encounter in the sequel, while Jensen himself might be haunted by the decision he made alone.

Or it could just be Eidos Montreal putting their fingers in their ears and hoping never to hear about the endings ever again. Yeah, sounds about right.

  1. They could’ve made up any old crap & I wouldn’t have noticed, I don’t remember the ending.

Really? No, I remember thinking quite hard about which would be MY choice and which would be Jensens choice?

It was quite cool, although at least one of the endings was really crappy, cannot remember which one, but remember I was annoyed.

Also like Me3 endings to be honest, similar choices. Out of Sci-fi lore

I really, really liked the monologues at the end (yes, I experienced all the different ones)

It was easy to experience all the endings. You just had to load your save game, and choose a different ending. I hope you didn’t play thru the entire game multiple time 🙂

You got different endings based on how you played the game (violent, non violent etc)

Nah, you need to do certain things to get option for all 4 endings, cause Jensen was stupid and needed guidance from various characters to show him the options. That was a bit silly, but it was a game, right.

Ohh…. I got a choice for all 4 endings and I thought that was what everyone got. Oh well, just waiting for a PS4 bundle before picking this game up 🙂

No, one on my 2nd play, played faster through game, I did not get all endings.

Also, killed the last boss in under two minutes 2nd time, joke easy.

Really. I don’t remember all that much of DX:HR, never felt drawn into the story.

Hmm, well I have replayed it like 4 times, so maybe that helps. It hit my I love Sci-fi nerve in a big way.

And because I love sci-fi, the choices in this game and the choices in ME3 were nothing new to me, i.e. many books in the genre covered those topics and moral questions. Older books especially, 60’s, Heinleing, Doc Smith (urg), Asimov, explored the moral questions very well.

Weakest part? I thought some of the endings were well thought out.

BUT, Jensen could die in one of them, that may change things a little bit, right?

Ah, but the one video of DXMD showed him floating in a pool of water (ocean) so his augs could have kept him alive or revived him

You mean augs that he had the whole game, but were not yet activated? I will be a bit pissy from a story point of view, cause you died at other times, so…..

Ah, I will probably take any old crap from them as long as the new game is good and fun.

I dunno about you, but I was fully augged out by the end of the game, everything ON.

Especially with the DC version of the game

Well the Sentinel RX system does repair the body, and the rhino dermal armour could help a bit

            Sigh. Yes.

BUT, I think we want, nay need, him to survive that in a believable way.

Problem with the first DX and the subsequent (crappy) DXIW, choices did not follow through.

HOWEVER, with DXIW being so mediocre, I guess not a lot of people cared.
