DOOM. Easily the best use of that word since Invader Zim wrote songs about it, came this year with a reboot of id’s genre-defining classic. I’ve told you before how DOOM is one of the most gruesomely satisfying experiences of this year, a visceral and fast-paced tour de force of shotguns and skulls being stomped on. The multiplayer however? That’s a bit more divisive with fans lately.

Now, I quite like the DOOM multiplayer the way it is. It’s old school, quick and terrific with the weapon selection. A lot of fans however, hate the guts out of the DOOM multiplayer, bemoaning the retro feel and the lack of some features. And possibly all that rampant cheating occurring on PC right now, something that happens obscenely often. Developer id software is looking into all that, as they take control of this side of the game away from the hired help of Certain Affinity who crafted the multiplayer for them.

“We worked with Certain Affinity through the launch of the game and really appreciate their contributions and effort on the game,” director Marty Stratton said Eurogamer, explaining how id can now focus more time and resources on multiplayer.

There’s certainly no lack of commitment to Doom as a multiplayer game on our side. We are already working on private matches with custom game settings and expect to include that in a free update this summer.

The PC version of the DOOM alpha had access to these custom games, which included bots and private matches. Features which were absent from the final game, “developer tools” that Stratton said are in the works for more custom game options. While id doesn’t have privately-hosted matches in the pipeline however, as they preferred a dedicated server solution instead.

Free and paid DLC is still coming, although id was quiet when pressed for details. “We know that talk will only go so far with players and hope that our actions this year continue to give players across every component of the game–multiplayer, single-player and SnapMap–more and more reasons to continue playing and enjoying the game in whatever way they choose,” Stratton said.

Haven’t bothered with the PVP, mostly because Uncharted 4 followed Doom and then Overwatch landed. Overwatch is the only PVP game that matters at the moment.

Dude, In the Division ( I restarted it because ) when you used semi automatic and straight up sniper rifles, did you have a slight pause before your hit registered ? When using automatic weapons, it’s ok. Just wondering if that’s normal considering our proximity to their servers.

I had some hideous lag in The Division but not that much in Doom and almost nothing in Overwatch, so it’s probably Ubisofts servers that’s to blame

I crack a headshot, I know it is a kill, move on to next target and I hear the headshot sound and see enemy drop (granted this is done in less than a second)

My single player campaign’s still crashing after almost a month of back and forth between bethesda’s support team, and I’m still unable to find multiplayer games most of the time. I’m the biggest id fan under the sun, but this has just been breaking my heart, and it doesn’t look like they can help me at all. Has anyone else been experiencing these issues? I’m literally only getting 33% of what I paid for, and snapmap can only keep me interested for so long (can’t even find snapmap lobbies, need to play alone.

@darrenpeach:disqus they’ve got a lot of weapons similar to the railgun, so I don’t really see the need to, but maybe they will someday, who knows

ADSL, 2 Mb MWEB, moving over to Telkom LTE in the next month. Don’t think the connection has anything to do with SP crashing, but I see how it can affect MP, but I’ve still managed to find a few games (albeit only TDM and like 2 games of warpath/domination) so I don’t see how speed would still be an issue then.

            i7 5th gen
16 GB RAM, HyperX I think
R7 200 AMD, can’t remember what brand though. Very standard build, not too heavy into customization yet, shit’s too expensive atm. Planning on getting a 1070 by the end of the year, and hoping it’ll fix my issue.

Really don’t want to wait until the end of the year to finish the best game I’ve played in nearly a decade though lol. Saddest part is that I’m crashing on the 2nd to last level. Started a new game last week, getting a constant crash on the 4th now.

            June 10, 2016 at 10:16

Aah, ok, the last mentioned upgrade should do the trick, but in the mean time, try to see if you can find a pre release driver, revert to it and try to run the game. Even with the nvidia cards it’s sometimes a solution.

          • Tiaan Venter

            June 10, 2016 at 10:20

This sounds like a good idea. If this works, you are more helpful than the entire bethesda support team has been over the past damn month.

          • Darren Peach

            June 10, 2016 at 10:06

Uninstall your sound card drivers, direct X and Nvidia Drivers. Delete Doom from your machine. Re-install your drivers and direct X. Make sure you have the newest drivers as well. Re-Install sound as well. If that fails, format and re-install windows. If it still crashes, check that you have sufficient cooling. If still, check your ram, Gfx card and so on and so forth. Config files can often get corrupted as well.

So I’m planning on compiling a list of things I’ve done, not sure where to post, as it’s about 20 emails of back and forth between the support team. I’ve done all of the above mentioned, and more. I’ve got an R7 200 series card, and there have been issues with them, but the day after doom launched they released a new driver update that was meant to fix the crashes. It just made the game crash even quicker. To give you an example of the last reply they sent me, it was a response from the fucking ELDER SCROLLS ONLINE SUPPORT TEAM, telling me they’re working on my problem. What pisses me off is that almost every time they replied to me, it was a different person working on the issue.

This was one of the many things the support team told me to do

          • Tiaan Venter

            June 10, 2016 at 10:19

7, upgraded to 10 (bad mistake, messed up the entire network code of my system, couldn’t connect to router through wired or wireless connection) and then went back to 7. This left my network code still messed up, and I had to reformat everything, so the OS is as clean as can be, I pretty much only have steam/doom/counterstrike installed

            June 10, 2016 at 10:23

Sheesh, ok, well then the best suggestion is to try the driver revert route, best recommendation would be about 4 to 5 releases pre Doom release, then work your way up from there, I really hope this works man, it sucks not being able to play a game you paid almost a grand for…

PhysX is an Nvidia app, that sometimes gets installed, and it totally messes with AMD tech.

Look for ingame option for that as well.

I’ve personally seen how PhysX destroyed my performance (running AMD/AMD this side)

I don’t install their sideprograms because of shit like this, but I’ll check if they snuck it onto the driver without me knowing. Highly doubt, but will go make sure tonight. Problem isn’t performance though, I’m getting a solid 60 – 80, 90 FPS on low/medium settings. I’ve changed every single option ingame, to no avail.

I honestly enjoyed the hell out of DOOM ( 2016 – but also the original and 2 … mebe not 3 so much ) and think ID did awesomely, insanely well for a reboot.

Now if only the new Unreal Tournament can get closer to done and ID can see viability in doing a reskin of Quake 3 Arena, I can die happy 🙂

( There’s just something about the old-school shooters that newer gens cannot capture )

PS – the new UT is looking good based on what I’ve seen thusfar
