As a result of a petition, a pair of retailers in Australia stopped stocking Grand Theft Auto V. The reason for the petition was GTA V’s deplorable treatment of its digital women. TakeTwo’s uberboss, Strauss Zelnick responded to the curtailment in a reasonable way. Speaking in a presentation at BMO Capital Markets 2014 Technology & Digital Media Conference, Take-Two’s president Karl Slatoff had a little more fire in what he had to say.

“It’s one thing for someone to not want to buy a piece of content, which is completely understandable,” Slatoff said. “And that’s really the solution. If you don’t like it and it’s offensive to you, then you don’t buy it. But for a person or a group of people to try to make that decision for millions of people… We have 34 million people who bought Grand Theft Auto, and if these folks had their way, none of those people would be able to buy Grand Theft Auto. And that really just flies in the face of everything that free society is based on. It’s the freedom of expression, and to try to squelch that is a dangerous and slippery slope to go down. So it’s really more disappointing for us in that regard than it is in the context of our business. Our business is going to be completely unaffected by this; it doesn’t make a difference to us. At the end of the day though, it’s not something you want because it’s a poor leadership decision.”

The comments came in response to a question about the impact the retail block has had on sales. In short, close to none. The game hasn’t been banned; it’s just two retail chains that have stopped stocking it.

“Australia is relatively small for us, and two retailers are relatively small in the context of Australia,” Slatoff said. “There are other places for folks to buy Grand Theft Auto in Australia.”

There’s no denying that GTA V is pretty horrible in its depiction and treatment of women. To be fair, it’s pretty horrible in its depictions of everyone. It’s equal opportunity nastiness! I do believe though, that if Target and Kmart felt that stocking GTA V was hurting their bottom line, they have every right to stop stocking the game. Just as Rockstar has every right to continue making games with awful depictions of people, people have every right to complain about those portrayals. And you have every right to choose whether or not to purchase those games.

I don’t smoke so I don’t buy cigarettes. I do try to empty the taps at the pub every night so I buy booze. It’s so simple really.
But let me get this right. When it was in third person it was fine. Now it’s in first person and it’s unacceptable?

LOL. It’s like somebody phoning in to 5fm and bitching about the music and so on. Well if you don’t like the music, then change the channel. Simple. But some folk reckon that their viewpoint is the one and only viewpoint and we must all be assimilated by the Borg and plug into the collective. Kind of like Lemmings all falling off of the same clifff

Freedom of choice. All good and well as long as your choice doesn’t make others feel uncomfortable. That’s the kind of society we live in unfortunately and the best one can do is to just stick to your choices if you feel they are right. As longs as you aren’t actually, physically or emotionaly harming anyone then how can anyone judge?

I feel the same about the whole smoking thing. (I don’t smoke). Don’t BAN smoking, just make it safe for those who choose not to smoke. You’re just taking away freedom of choice.

I used to smoke and while I smoked I found it 100% acceptable that we had designated areas to smoke because let’s face it, for a non smoker that smell can be awful (Forget about the health thing)

Now I don’t smoke and if I chose to sit in a smoking area then I have no right to complain. Yet you have people who are pushing for smoking areas to be banned completely. Why? I don’t get it? It’s not like it’s affecting the non smoking areas? What are you doing in the smoking area then? Get out!

Same thing with gaming. If you don’t like the game or don’t want your child playing the game then don’t buy it / let them play it. Especially considering that little Timmy age 14 should never be allowed to play an adult game in the first place

Taking away freedom is never the answer

It is the same argument with the firearm industry. To get a license is such a mission these days, because, “guns kill people and so you shouldn’t own one”. Nevermind that more people get stabbed and clobbered to death than by gunshot! I think I need to move to Utah or Arizona where I can own as many guns as I like, drive a HUGE V8 that gets 3km/l, and then, problem solved. for me at least.

I find it funny how concerned parents always want to ban adult content for the sake of the children. Adults get to play with toys kids can’t. That’s pretty much the best part of being an adult. If you’re so fucking concerned how about you spend more time trying to mind control your own child, or if parenting is too much trouble don’t let them out into places where they might see something that causes impure thoughts to enter their vulnerable little minds.

But it’s not about that is it? Kids are the acceptable smoke screen, because no one wants to hurt a kid. You just don’t like it, so it must be banned to spare your delicate sensibilities. Well tough shit for you. Tough shit for me too, because there’s a crap load of things I don’t like or agree with – I don’t call for it to be banned because I’m actually, and surprisingly, mature enough to deal with people liking something I don’t. Obviously I assume we can all agree on things which aren’t appropriate, like liquor stores or adult shops next to schools because of actual risk, but something like this? Give me a break.

Epic rant. 8/10. I would have used a few more comedic lines to emphasise the points. But yes, you are quite right. Parents are using kids as the smokescreen and it’s wrong.

Why are these kids playing these games? Honestly? It’s an adult game. For adults. Not for young kids. The parents need to look at themselves a bit and ask themselves why little Timmy is playing goat killer simulator battle destiny robot monster slayer field x 300000000 and 1 reloaded.

You make valid points but I have to point out: What’s the difference if an adult store or liquor store is next to a school? Is there any more risk of a child going into one of those stores if it is next door or on his route home?

There was a liquor store across the street from school where I grew up. But so was my house. And I was lazy. So I just went home.

The liquor store was across the road? And so was your home? So home = liquor store?! o_O **mind blown**

          😉

Same here – had a liquor store across the road from school too – the ‘older/cool’ kids all went there for their ciggies… Then were promptly busted by the Prefects who knew to look out at that store for kids going in. Made for great, break-time entertainment, watching from the boundary fence on the cricket field.

It’s not really about the content itself. Kids won’t (probably) be allowed in or served if they do – it’s against the law. It’s about the people going there. I used to work for a retail liquor company – you get some very unsavoury characters hanging around the stores all day long.

You may not open a liquor store in a 500m radius from a school or church. (If I remember correctly). That is the same as putting an age restriction on a game I think. Besides who do you blame if a dad / mom gives alcohol to their under age child. The liquor store owner that sold the alcohol to the parent or the parent that gives it to the child? But I do feel there is an inherent risk of exploitation from shopkeepers that will allow entry of under age kids to these premisses, so maybe it’s valid to not have them nearby?

I remember a mom throwing a shit fit in the store because when she parked right outside the entrance & sent her kid in to buy a 6-pack we refused to serve him. She HAD to come in and purchase it herself.

All I can say is it’s ridiculous that liquor stores close so early these days. if I just get caught in some traffic or work a bit late then I’m screwed.

Yes, I especially like the reasoning that it somehow makes people drink less. What BS.

            December 10, 2014 at 11:52

All it’s done is screw the businesses. The people who drink responsibly are the ones who will now maybe miss buying something because the store closed earlier. But the guys out to get smashed out of their minds will make sure they get there in time.
            It makes no logical sense.

While in theory, what you say makes absolute sense. In practice though, hmmmm…we know people can’t be trusted on their own.
You may be mature enough to manage things you don’t agree with but that isn’t true for everyone.Like sticking to age restrictions on games for example. For this reason , some may see a total ban as the best way forward.
Why wouldn’t someone view the sale of an x rated game in the very same catalogs as kids games similar to having a bottle store next to a school?
Ultimately, the writer of this article is saying that it’s their right call for bans just as those who would call to allow it have the right to do so.

In practice we have laws & regulations around content like games, movies, etc – what’s acceptable, who can access it, that kind of stuff. People don’t have to agree, they can make petitions like this, they also need to understand they can be told to get lost.

I read an article that shows the point of view of the women who started the petition. She suffered abuse and violence as a young sex worker. I don’t recall reading anything specific about how she got into it but I don’t really think that makes a difference.

I understand and support her reasons for starting the petition as it’s something that has deeply affected her. Should we expect her to ignore something that has scarred her for life? Perhaps this is something that is empowering her whereas before she felt powerless, this is obviously something she cannot abide.

She has found like minded individuals who agree with her so power to them. Sure they are not thinking about the fact that just like books and movies gaming is now having it’s turn in the spotlight for supposedly promoting violence and murder. Can we really blame them for feeling passionately about something like this even if it is misdirected?

I just think that especially in this country where rape and violence against women is such an issue we should try to understand peoples reactions to things like this because as a community we can still support them.

I only bring this up to add a different perspective. I agree that if you don’t like it don’t buy it and for the love of all that’s holy don’t buy it for kids who do not understand or lack the maturity to have perspective.

While I can certainly sympathise with what happened to her & that her motives might be good, I think her action is misguided in this instance. Banning this game from a store is unlikely to have any impact on the actions that affected her life, or affect others similarly in the future. It also went through Aus’ very strict game vetting process after all.

      >Should we expect her to ignore something that has scarred her for life?

Should we do the same with all victims of crimes? Or is this another “damsel in distress” scenario where a woman needs to be accepted as a far more emotionally fragile creature and given special treatment?

What of those who have developed deep fear of blacks after living among high-crime areas, or being victims of violent robberies or assaults? Would you give just as much sympathy and understanding to a petition made by them?

One can be sympathetic without being oppressive to others. Having your feelings hurt does not make you special, yet that seems to be what we teach our children today. Just because you have a voice it does not make you important.

No this has nothing to do with her being a women or being fragile. I just wanted to inject a little understanding into the debate which I felt was missing.

Also there is nothing fragile about standing up for something you believe in and putting it out there that this happened to you. Regardless of it being misguided or targeted at the wrong thing I can respect that.

lol this is why I hate this new feminism garbage. You actually torture a man in this game .. . brutally. In fact, most of the violent stuff in the game is enacted toward men. Yet the few instances of female violence is what is important. Not surprising coming from Australia though considering they are highly gynocentric. They spend 4 times on women’s health issues then men’s. If you are a man in Australia, be ready for nobody to give a shit about you.
