Improbable rumour that I hope is real: There’s a Godzilla vs King Kong game coming

The last day or two have seen an explosion of leaks and rumours – which can only mean one thing: It’s E3 time! Yes, E3 kicks off this weekend, so we’re starting off with well, more rumours. This time, something that’s a little out of left field.

According to a particularly dubious 4chan leak (via Gamerant), BlazBlue and Dragonball FighterZ developer Arc System works is busy making a new 2D fighting game that’ll pit the legendary mega monster Godzilla and King Kong against each other. According to said leak, expect the game to be announced at E3, possibly at Microsoft’s conference. The rumour suggests that the game will have an extensive roster of Kaiju available to play as:

  • Anguirus
  • Baragon
  • Behemoth
  • Destoroyah
  • Gigan
  • Godzilla (1954)
  • Godzilla (2014)
  • Jet Jaguar
  • King Caesar
  • King Ghidorah
  • Kiryu
  • Kong
  • Mecha Godzilla Mk1
  • MechaniKong
  • Megalon
  • Mothra
  • Muto
  • Orga
  • Rodan
  • Space Godzilla
  • Zilla

Given the source, I’d take this with a giant, Kaiju-sized grain of salt, especially given that the most recent Godzilla movies didn’t quite light the box office on fire. This would be made to tie into next year’s film. It would make this a curious, even unlikely game that I really, really hope happens. Mostly because I actually quite liked Primal Rage in the 90s and another game that lets me put great big beasties against each other sounds like a good time.
