All of my ‘special folders’ are on externals. They’re special for a reason, and should I ever get a virus, I’d not want such folders subject to prying eyes. Then again, this shouldn’t surprise me, the LG staff haven’t exactly shown to be even moderately PC literate.

(No offense LG, it is what it is).

So throw it on a collection of Blu Rays? And store those safely? There are methods of storing your data safely, that don’t involve externals. (Such as the cloud, as you say).

I do live in a country where things get stolen, even from houses. But, I also live in a house where we’ve got one of these:

Sorry no, I don’t have a license for automatics. It needs explaining? The 2nd amendment, whether rightfully or wrongfully interpreted, currently gives each citizen the right to bear arms. And there are many very powerful and rich entities willing to ensure that interpretation remains part of the 2nd Amendment.

I’m sure a stereotype could be applied to me, but I prefer not stereotyping people, when possible (The one that I can’t seem to find a way around is gamer’s akin to drug addicts, ergo, not being able to refuse buying a game that promotes policies that go against their principles). They’re pretty bereft of any intelligence, and simply a way to marginalize a group(s) of people.

I don’t have any children, and defragging isn’t a lie if you understand how a HDD stores data.

Easiest way to explain it is think of a stack of plates, each plate stores data. When you have a new drive, all the data is stored contiguously one plate gets filled up, then it moves to the next, and fills that up. While your PC is on, certain files get bigger or smaller, naturally, just from doing your normal routine on PC. This causes fragmentation as the space surrounding the file is taken by other software, data, etc…

So the system has to move to a different part of the plate (or a different plate entirely) to store the rest of the file. When you uninstall software, this causes large gaps of free space, among all the other contiguously saved data. Those gaps get filled by new files, or new software, but it will rarely ever be the appropriate size for what the system wants to put in there, so again, more fragmentation as it finds more space around the plates.

In the end, what you have is the system going from point to point to point around each plate, and up and down the stack of plates to access one file or program, which is a waste of CPU and efficiency.

If you store your ‘data’ on a separate drive, that data always stays contiguous, and it makes defragmentation of your OS far far simpler (or real-time defraging for that matter), because it’s not having to move around video, music and other such large data files (to create contiguous space for your software/OS etc…)

I don’t care, it’s not for you, it’s so that others don’t fall prey to your ignorance in the matter. When people actually understand a process, they’re more likely to remember it in the future and alter their practices to avoid any issues.

With you on this. I’ve kept my OS drive separate from data since Win 98. Started primarily due to Windows needing a fresh installation every 6 months back then.
