In Other News – 20 June 2014

Lindsay-Marie

I’m a tad bit miffed today. I have a routine in the mornings, which usually consists of getting up early to watch Batman Begins twice, grabbing some tea and sitting down to start working. And then my work PC decides to do a full crash on me. It’s not that my hardware is failing that grinds my gears. It’s the fact that I can’t work, period, when this happens. And not being able to do what I love makes me grumpy. That, and I may have lost my special folder on that laptop.

In Other News: Battlefield was unacceptable, learn some Valiant Hearts history, Microsoft supports Rare and you can thank Bungie for the PS4 controller.

Here’s the news that we didn’t post today, because I was too busy being grumpy for the first time in three years.

“That, and I may have lost my special folder on that laptop.”

Pull the HD out, connect it to an external dock, plug into a workstation and peruse at your leisure (if the drive is still readable).

If not readable once connected to an external dock or as 2nd drive use getdataback for NTFS or something similar. Usually works well as long as the drive is still spinning.

Ok well, without sounding like a total PC elitist…if you store your data, on the same drive as your OS, you kinda earned what’s happened. Unless you have an SSD, standard drives have wear and tear, and some of them (if you look into it) can actually fail pretty quickly.

Always, always, always store your ‘data’ on a separate drive from your OS. It just makes everything easier. (Defraging, system cleanup, ensuring your data doesn’t get stolen, corrupted or infected etc…)

All of my ‘special folders’ are on externals. They’re special for a reason, and should I ever get a virus, I’d not want such folders subject to prying eyes. Then again, this shouldn’t surprise me, the LG staff haven’t exactly shown to be even moderately PC literate.

(No offense LG, it is what it is).

You clearly do not live in a country where they kick in your door and run away with everything that has a cable attached to it.

My important stuff is either on cloud storage (GDrive or Dropbox), level 2 important, is a raid enabled NES hidden in cupboard rawl bolted to the wall.

            June 20, 2014 at 17:28

So throw it on a collection of Blu Rays? And store those safely? There are methods of storing your data safely, that don’t involve externals. (Such as the cloud, as you say).

I do live in a country where things get stolen, even from houses. But, I also live in a house where we’ve got one of these:

            http://springfieldm1a.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/M1A.gif

That’s if they get past the gamut of knives, ice picks and ice axes. Yeah, my house is, or could be a house of horrors. hehe.

Oscar Pistorius is from South Africa, I live in the US, which should answer your question lol. Though, that particular gun was the model my Dad used in the Army, which is why it’s part of the family now.

Sorry no, I don’t have a license for automatics. Nor do I own an American flag, nor do I own a scooter, or an oxygen mask/tank, in fact, I haven’t actually had fast food in over a year, and I haven’t stepped foot in a Wal-Mart in over 5. And I actually haven’t fired a gun in over 10 years, closer to 20 at this point 🙂

          • Brian Murphy

            June 20, 2014 at 17:45

It needs explaining? The 2nd amendment, whether rightfully or wrongfully interpreted, currently gives each citizen the right to bear arms. And there are many very powerful and rich entities willing to ensure that interpretation remains part of the 2nd Amendment.

Kinder eggs were choking kids, and rather than American parents be responsible for their lack of paying attention to their children’s activities, they sue. Never said America was perfect, I did however say that your stereotypes don’t apply to me.

Typical though, I’ve buried your claims, so you change topics.

            June 20, 2014 at 17:54

I’m sure a stereotype could be applied to me, but I prefer not stereotyping people, when possible (The one that I can’t seem to find a way around is gamer’s akin to drug addicts, ergo, not being able to refuse buying a game that promotes policies that go against their principles). They’re pretty bereft of any intelligence, and simply a way to marginalize a group(s) of people.

No “stereotype problems” form my side. Friends with a democrat from Arizona, republican from Texas, have colleagues in California and Pennsylvania. Ranging from immigrants South Africa, India, Asia to x-th generation “American”. Out of the whole lot I’m probably the fattest, eat the most McDonalds and except for Texan own the most firearms.

          • Brian Murphy

            June 20, 2014 at 17:02

I don’t have any children, and defragging isn’t a lie if you understand how a HDD stores data.

Easiest way to explain it is think of a stack of plates, each plate stores data. When you have a new drive, all the data is stored contiguously one plate gets filled up, then it moves to the next, and fills that up. While your PC is on, certain files get bigger or smaller, naturally, just from doing your normal routine on PC. This causes fragmentation as the space surrounding the file is taken by other software, data, etc…

So the system has to move to a different part of the plate (or a different plate entirely) to store the rest of the file. When you uninstall software, this causes large gaps of free space, among all the other contiguously saved data. Those gaps get filled by new files, or new software, but it will rarely ever be the appropriate size for what the system wants to put in there, so again, more fragmentation as it finds more space around the plates.

In the end, what you have is the system going from point to point to point around each plate, and up and down the stack of plates to access one file or program, which is a waste of CPU and efficiency.

If you store your ‘data’ on a separate drive, that data always stays contiguous, and it makes defragmentation of your OS far far simpler (or real-time defraging for that matter), because it’s not having to move around video, music and other such large data files (to create contiguous space for your software/OS etc…)

I don’t care, it’s not for you, it’s so that others don’t fall prey to your ignorance in the matter. When people actually understand a process, they’re more likely to remember it in the future and alter their practices to avoid any issues.
