Indie Zoe: Raider of the Lost News (13 November 2014)

Cartoon indie zoe

Why did I think that yesterday was Thursday? I’m not entirely sure, I think the days of the week are just running into each other. But that’s okay, because I have an exclusive deal on an indie game just for our wonderful readers. That’s right, just because you visit this site, you get some cool stuff for free, straight from the developers.

Before I tell you about the cool stuff that you can get just for reading this article, here is some indie news for you.

Patrice Desilets, the creator of the Assassin’s Creed universe, has moved around from Ubisoft to THQ, eventually leading to plenty of heartache and lawsuits. He has now started his own studio, Panache Digital Games. There is no info on the site about what he’s doing, but at least there’s a fancy landing page.

I’ve told you about O3DX before, and now they’re over on Greenlight and looking for some love. However, rather than just begging for some Greenlight help, they are also offering an exclusive promo to Lazygamer readers – a 50% discount!

The cheatcodes are lazyjump and spacejump. (Usage instructions in the download) And the voucher code they have to enter to receive the discount is GimmeLazyO3DX. The link to claim the discount is: https://payableform.appspot.com/forms/ai41o Every steam player that owns the discounted version will also get a FREE steam key once we are greenlit.

So, go support them, and go redeem some codes. Well done for being such an awesome community that the developers themselves want to reward you.

This is normally when I tell you about a cool new local indie prototype. I saw a few at the latest Make Games SA meet up, but it seems that the developers haven’t put them online for the rest of us. I attribute this to the fact that most game developers locally are either hard core veterans who release a game or two (or five) a year and spend the rest of the time diligently fixing their code, or they are game design students who release tons of prototypes into the wild, except now that they are writing exams. It’s a symptom of the local gaming scene – while there are some mature companies making games, the majority of the game developers are students or still very young. Here’s hoping that as the local industry matures, I am inundated with prototypes all the time. Meanwhile, just go play some indie games and be happy.

I finished Contrast on Sunday, man what a cool little indie game that is. The puzzles/platforming aren’t particularly difficult which can be good or bad depending on your preferences, the art style is interesting, music is good & the story is excellent.

I was checking to see if you have Valiant Hearts before I told you to GET IT, and the first 5 games that popped up were all games with the word Alien in it. You really are an alien, aren’t you?
But seriously dude, get Valiant Hearts. If you like a 2D side-scroller with good story, great music and nice artwork you’ll love it.
PS. Prepare yourself to cry also.

I’m okay with that. The one thing I find better about Ubi is that they’ll do stuff like that game, Child of Light or Blood Dragon – they’re at least willing to try these odd little projects every so often.

I agree. I think Valiant hearts is one of my top three games for the year.

It should be mentioned that the price for O3DX is $20 and with the GimmeLazyO3DX code it is $10.

True Rags. The video is a teaser trailer. It was based on the first 4 levels in the concept. The game is however now finished with 30 production ready levels. The official trailer video is currently in production..so sorry for only showing the teaser..

Just from the preview video, it looks very rushed and incomplete. Like the vehicle went over an obstacle, but face first into a hill at 0:49? But like O3DX explained it the concept video which I now learned.
Here are a few critiques: The shots of the vehicles should have better lighting. You can hardly see the detail of the vehicles in opening sequences like at 0:30. They could also be posed better, like the red bakkie at 0:10. Perhaps use the poses to demonstrate their purpose. Like bakkie better at traction, pose it on rough terrain, a buggie on gravel road to show its agility and speed?

The hud should only display when racing not during the float camera.

Its also hard to judge what you actually do in the game, just hold forward? Maybe slow it down and show the interaction with the hud to demo the functionality and mechanics?

The stars seem misplaced. Flags and banners I think would be less cartoony and more immersive? Maybe marshals waving flags? It feels a bit empty, like no one is in the world but you?

Hey Rags, thank you for taking the time to do a detailed analysis. This kind of feedback means the world to me. Unfortunately it’s on the the teaser trailer that was made during the concept phase. I wish we met you earlier. Youtube videos also does not do the game justice with it’s inferior pixel quality and compression artifacts. Sucks.. In future I think we should get the official trailer video out before making too much noise..although we did have an overwhelming positive response on Greenlight.. But greenlight voters know they’re voting on an incomplete title. The one thing that is hard to come by is honest critique and good suggestions. I’m passing your suggestions on to the video editor.

I agree that the hud should not show during the fly in camera scene. Well spotted. Although you can skip the camera fly in by pressing a button..we will need to make an alternative plan there. The feeling of being alone might be intentional..as this is an off road title and I want people to feel they are escaping society. We do need sponsorships but the banners might be totally removed on the steam version..we are still pending a decision there. These are tiny things. Try the pre-release. It’s a bit over R100. I’m convinced you will agree that this is a polished game but I will appreciate every criticism you have to offer..
