A defining moment for me as a gamer was when I watched that first YouTube video of Johnny Lee and the Wii headtracking, it was mind blowing and just showed the still untouched abilities of 3D gaming and the Wii.

Well the years have passed (3 to be exact) and we now have the Kinect which Microsoft hired Johnny to help with but we are still not seeing that 3D technology.

Now the Engineering Human-Computer Interaction Research Group has taken his research further and has ported the head tracking ability to the iPhone and iPad.

Unfortunately I can’t find a download for it but check out these two video’s to see exactly what we are missing from gaming at the moment.

According to them HCP (Head-Coupled Perspective) can be described as follows

Head-Coupled Perspective (HCP) on mobile devices allows to create a glasses-free monocular 3D display. It is based on a efficient head-tracker that uses the front-facing camera of the device. We use an off-axis projection in order to adapt the perspective of the 3D scene according to the head’s position of the user. Such spatially-aware mobile display enables to improve the possibilities of interaction.
