Is a Pacific Rim game on the way?

If you happened to follow our sister site TheMovies.co.za (obligatory and shameless promotion, ho!), you’d know that there happens to be one film that we’re dying to see this year. That film, is Pacific Rim. It is essentially, an anime movie that finds humanity fighting an invasion of gigantic alien creatures with the best weapon of all: Equally massive robot death machines that happen to weigh 2500 tonnes of awesome. This is the kind of premise that should have a game tie-in. Good thing that it does then.

Guillermo Del Toro’s upcoming film has managed to find its way onto the video game rating system, as it popped up on the Australian Classification Board according to VG247.

The listing details that the game will be multi-platform, will contain moderate impact fantasy violence and online elements, so expect some form of Jaeger vs Kaiju multiplayer gameplay I reckon. Pacific Rim sounds like the perfect setting for a fighting game, which is most likely why current WWE developer Yukes is busy developing and publishing the game.

;

Which means that this will most likely be a digital release as well then. I’m not too fond of Yukes lately, seeing as how they’ve devolved the WWE franchise from main event to jobber status. But even they can’t screw up a premise as delightfully simple as robot on monster action.

Can they?

Robot games are a difficult type of game to make. Most games of similiar type, such as amored core for example, went for a realistic feel to the robots, but that in turn made the robots too clunky and slow. Then you get Z.O.E , that just nailed the more, ‘mech anime’ feel down to the tee …. I prefer the more gundam feel to robots.

Pacific Rim’s robots look quite big and slow so , I don’t know, they could mess it up even with the simple premise, It’s a movie tie-in. In anycase listen to the Z.O.E 2 theme song and revel in the awesomeness of …(I.M.O) the best mech game ever.

You know how big these are? Take an Atlas BattleMech, they are 100 tons. 100. One hundred.

These suckas are 2500!!!! Thats TWO THOUSAND FIVE HUNDRED!!!

    O_O

    That’s 25 x Atlas!!!!

      totally.

Like the Rift Role Playing game: one of the player character was a giant being that could only use clubs as a weapon, like, for example, a 10 metre tall mech. I could spell unbalanced.

Once you go that big, it is kinda fun but also a bit limiting, I think.

Atlas rocked. Fast-ish and awesome heatsinks.

Compare Atlas to other 100 ton mechs. If memory serves (and this was years ago, mind) the Atlas was faster than most of the big boys.

A quick google shows the Mech Warrior 4 flavour was 81 km/h http://www.mechwarriorwiki.com/wiki/Atlas

But other sources showed 54 km/h.

So perhaps I remember the Mech Warrior 3 more than other sources

            The Daishi is faster.

I knew the MW4 stats quite well. Always took Daishi over Atlas. Better hardpoints, speed for my needs

Daishi: oh yes, the flood of memories. That was indeed the mech the cool kids used.

            Thanks 🙂

You must get lucky several times, Atlas once. Hit on Leg, BOOM, movement advantage largely negated.

I have not played in years!

I still played tabletop mechwarrior, difficult to play.

My internet connection is not good enough, I tried to play online.

            BUT

Sir Erwin (Now achievement) has pointed out the Daishi is the cool one: I now regret all Atlas based comments, cause I think my memory is dodgy

I have completely lost faith (There’s always the hope that somebody would get it right) in the industry to adapt games based on movies or and other source material. Aliens, Colonial Marines – fool me once, shame on you. Star Trek – fool me twice, shame on me. Game based on the awesome movie under the working title ‘Pacific Rim(job)’ – fuck you!
