Is Baldur's Gate making a return?

In an industry dominated by first-person shooters and annual sports games, it’s often sad to see classic and more complex games fall out of touch with gaming audiences, much like what happened to the grand Baldur’s Gate titles.

Bioware closed the book on the legendary and deep series with Dark Alliance 2 back at the end of 2003, with a few collected edition releases popping up in the years since then. But otherwise, Baldur’s Gate had come full circle, closing the doors on it’s cult-favourite fantasy worlds.

But it seems that those doors have opened again.

 Head on over to the Baldursgate.com website, and you’ll find yourself looking at a whole new design, as the site has had a cryptic facelift. Could it be part of the BG 2 complete edition that’s hitting Steam soon?

Former Bioware designer and now independent developer for Beamdog Trent Oster doesn’t think so, as he told Gamebanshee that the site was not related to the Steam version that was on the way.

We’re not related to the Steam complete edition, I can tell you that much. Other than that, we’re hoping to announce something soon.

A little detective work revealed that the source code of the website contained some clues, which had been popping up over a few months, with the latest one saying;

<!– February 28, 2012 –>

<!– Shadowy Figure- Raise Dead : Infinity Engine –>

<!– For years, I clung to the memory of it. Then the memory of the memory. –>

<!– And then… it returned. Better than it was before. –>

<!– Pore over the tapestries and works of art hanging from our walls if you wish, Child of Bhaal… perhaps you will find a clue. But patience, ah… patience would reveal it all. –>

The Infinity engine that was referenced no doubt refers to gameplay engine that gave life to the Baldur’s Gate, Planescape Torment and Icewind Dale games, so could we be seeing the return of some classic games in a classic format?

Oster apparently knows, and teased the following on Twitter;

If the Baldur’s Gate and Icewind Dale games are returning, it would make perfect sense for them to appear on Android and iOS platforms if they’re reusing the classic Infinity Engine. But then again, Bioware could also be readying for a larger, multi-platform return of their beloved franchises.

What say you then, is the gaming world ready for an in depth RPG experience, or are we looking at a classic game reimagined in the same vein as Dragon Age? Only time will tell…
