Is Capcom preparing to reboot Onimusha?

Capcom may have quite a few blockbuster franchises under it’s udders, but it’s also got quite a few forgotten ones as well. One such slumbering franchise, is Onimusha, a supernatural swords and sorcery trilogy, which was last seen back in 2006 as a Jean Reno action simulator game. It’s been largely dormant since then, but it looks like Capcom is ready to bring it back for a new generation of gamers.

Capcom has tapped Lost Planet 3 developer Spark Unlimited to begin work on an “adventure series reboot”, according to PSM3 UK, which points towards a possible Onimusha revival. Or Megaman, but seeing as how Capcom would rather skin puppies than bring that franchise back, it looks like Geoff will still be crying in a corner for years to come.

Spark Unlimited seems to be the go-to developer for Capcom lately, as they’ve worked on Lost Planet, and will be handling Ninja Gaiden (Gah!) as well for the house of Street Fighter. Early last year, Capcom’s overworked, always smiling employee, Yoshinori Ono also speculated on an Onimusha revival, as he believed that the time was right to bring the franchise back.

“I wouldn’t want to do the things we’ve done before. I think it might be time to progress beyond the standard single-player adventure”, Ono said. What do you chaps think? Keen for a new stab at the series, or is it better off to let Jean Reno rest? Personally, I’m hoping that one day, Capcom brings back Viewtiful Joe, as that’s one hell of an overlooked game series.
