Is Game Sharing “Utter Horse Sh*t”?

Our outspoken friend David Jaffe has been at it again and has called the PSN’s gaming sharing ability

“Utter Horse Sh*t”

If you weren’t aware, Game Sharing is exactly what it sounds like and allows you to share a game you purchased with your friends.

In essence it’s legal piracy really as the game developer isn’t given the option to allow it or not.

On the one hand if I my friend wants to invite me into a multiplayer session of Castle Crashers* and I don’t have the game then it would be nice to share it for a while and see if I like the game.

However then allowing me to go and complete the single player campaign under the same shared game seems a little wrong and I can see where David Jaffe is coming from.

Personally I like the idea Sony patented a little while back with a degrading demo, so I can get invited to a game of Castle Crashers which will work perfectly for a few hours and then start degrading unless I pay for the full version.

In that was I could test single player but I won’t be able to get the full experience unless I fork over the cash.

*David Jaffe didn’t create Castle Crashers, he was part of Calling All Cars but I prefer Castle Crashers so I used that in my example instead.

The whole game sharing is actual quite complex and you actually need to trust someone with your username and password…

You have 5 activations on one account. Now if you want to share a game with someone you need to give them your username and password so that they can log activate your account on their playstation. Now if you havent deleted your banking details then they can access the store and purchase games. They can also download any game that you’ve bought (so for trades you actually giving the person full access to all your games). As long as the account is activate on the PS3 you will be able to play games (even if you are offline and logged into another account). You have to log back into the account and deactivate the account to release it from the PS3 (no games will be able to be played).

So now lets say your account has been activated on 5 different PS3’s. Now someone’s PS3 breaks (YLOD), that one account was then not deactivate on that PS3 which means you only have 4 accounts now. You see the problem… Also if you traded something with someone and you need an account. You need to nicely ask him to deactivate (giving him your PSN details again) to free up a spot.

There are many risks involved and you really only should give your account details to actual friends – and if possible go to there house and do it yourself.

Some games also have restrictions on the multiplayer if you are game sharing (only one person allowed every 24 hours).
