Is Gears 2 the only great game on the 360 this year?

clip_image001So we have seen a lot of Sony’s hand this year with some expected mega hits to land including, Metal Gear Solid 4, Killzone 2 and Resistance 2 however the 360 line up is still looking a little bleak.

Only in terms of exclusives however, with Too Human, Ninja Gaiden and Fable 2 being the most obvious ones. I was under the impression that Battlefield: Bad Company was also an exclusive and that really is looking good.

However to be fair none of those has anywhere near the reach of Gears of War or Halo. So is Gears the only real reason to own a 360 this year? I have to believe that there is more to come still but so far nothing has been announced.

I wouldn’t worry to much if you were a 360 fan however, you are still going to get to play Rainbow 6 Vegas 2, Endwar, Frontlines, GTA IV and my tip for game of the year Alone in the Dark.

So while the 360 may not have the killer line up of exclusives this year I don’t think anyone is going to be overly disappointed quite yet.

The PS3 does have a spectacular line up for 2008. But your sensationalist headline is really downplaying the 360’s exclusive lineup.

You’re putting Killzone 2, Resistance 2 MGS4 and Gran Tourismo 5 against Too Human, Ninja Gaiden and Fable 2. Yes, without GOW2 this comparision does put the 360 a little behind, but by no means bleak!

But as you pointed out, most of the best games for 2008 are multiplatform anyway, so apart from a handful of exclusives it actually doesn’t matter which of the two consoles you own.

One thing that must not be overlooked as well is the exclusive content for GTAIV. I bet msoft is gonna make sure that the public knows it has the best version of the game.

There was a quote taken out of context (so it’s probably not true) that only the 360 version will have multiplayer in GTA IV. If that’s true, the impact will be huge.

MS doesn’t have an exclusive MGS game. Saints Row 2 is multi platform.

@Milesh, I thought it was less sensationalist than the source article. Has Gears 2 saved MS this year? It’s February , no one needs saving yet 😀

@Milesh again, the rumour about the 360 version only having multiplayer was shot down by Rockstar already.

It stemmed from a comment about exclusive downloadable content and was as you say, out of context.

Lazy you PS3 troll (heh heh 😉 ) you left out page 2 of the article.
    http://www.videogamer.com/features/article/25-02-2008-317-2.html

I love what hype does to simple minds.

People seem to forget that Fable was 2005 game of the year and sold Around 3 million copies (more than any PS3 game to date 😉 ) and received more than 40 awards. What tards seem to focus on was the negativity around that fact that PM promised more than he delivered, but as always he still delivered an excellent game.

So far everything I’ve seen around Fable 2 is innovative and awesome.

By contrast everyone is screaming Resistance! Killzone! When , while R2 might be pretty decent, the end of the year is already inundated with good shooters (Well BF:BC will pwn all ;), and lazy, it’s PS3 & 360 btw) And don’t get me started on Killzone 2. C@rp too late :p

Killzone was, at best, an average shooter. The world saw one clip of graphics which are now pretty average by modern standards and gameplay that is barely drab bog standard space marines versus aliens gameplay, and it’s the second coming? Just clear your hype cache for a bit and prepare for disappointment. Rather bet on Resistance or BF.

As far as other 360 titles go, anyone who didn’t notice APB needs a head check, and then there’s the mysterious Project Offset which I suspect could be this years biggest sleeper hit.

Then there’s Splitter cell: Conviction, which will never outhype MGS4, but, with Assassins Creed type mechanics in a modern world and am actual story line (sorry AC) it could be another AAA winner.

And lets not Forget Alan Wake or Banjo Kazooie.

Believe me there’s tons of awesome stuff coming exclusively to the 360 this year and while none might be as hyped as any PS3 games, they certainly offer a lot more original idea’s and interesting twists.

    @doobi

Killzone 2, may or may not be good, but the hype machine is running strong. Same with Halo 3, which was rather average, but sold in bucketloads.

Alan Wake is 2009, so that doesn’t count.

MS (and Sony and Ninty for that matter) still have a few unannounced titles for 2008, but i think we’re in for some surprises. Not big MGS4/Resistance beating hits but new IPs for the kids/casual gamer market. MS’s 2008 goal seems to be to get the masses to stop thinking that the 360 is a hardcore gamer’s console.

Owning all the consoles, I couldn’t give a sh*t who wins. What I do know, however, is the 360 has a far less exciting line-up than the PS3 (Gears 2 considered). Now, I speak from two perspectives – my own personal opinion and fact:

Factually, Microsoft anally raped Sony in 2007. 😀

Factually, MGS is a far bigger game than Fable 2…

Factually LittleBigPlanet has waaaay more hype than Banjothreeie (or whatever they decide to call it).

Factually, Gran Tourismo 5 is a beast in itself and when the glorified demo can move platinum + and the last one move 5million +, the one before it moving 10 million +, it isn’t a joke.

Factually, Killzone 2 has a shit storm of hype – if only because people are awaiting to see if lightning can strike twice in one place – a turd emerging from a supposed gem.

Factually, Resistance (not that I know why) was well-liked and Resistance 2 is coming off of that storm with mad hype.

Factually, MGS is the Jesus of video games 🙂 . (Or is that my opinion? :D)

I think Gears really is the shining son, amongst a whole host of shining sons coming out of Sony. Gears has broad shoulders and really did carry the 360 until 2007 got out of control. However, it is coming soooo late in 2008 (after Metal Gear, LBP, and possibly GT5) that to expect it to have the same repeat penetration is a wii bit crazy.

@ doobi: don’t know which alternate universe that you live in where fable won GOTY for 2005(it was released in 2004 btw). maybe xbox GOTY, but then ther was not much competition for that. and the reviews for the most part were not that special.

Sony’s been hyping their titles for over a year, Microsoft’s been keeping them under wraps so as to focus on 07, no surprises there. There’s also the matter of legacy. The PS games have been huge on a massive install base, the 360 titles are still relatively unknown to the unwashed masses 😉 It’s up to Microsoft to start hyping them and I suspect they’re trying not to overload the channel in February already.

PBD, I have to disagree on Gears. I think Gears 1 caught everyone with their pants down. To sell 4.5 million copies when it was launched against an install base of around 7 million is no mean feat. That’s the same attach rate as Halo 3, which leads me to believe it might even dethrone Halo.

Also, MGS will be big, huge in fact, but it’s still a niche game I’m afraid. I’ve never liked any of them, the same goes for FF. I there’s a PS3 ‘saviour’ it will be GT5, not MGS. Racers always hit that casual/hardcore split and GT has that mastered.

Alan wake might slip, but I don’t think so. It’s been tagged as ’08 since ’06. I just think they want to get it right before showing it.

It all comes down to commercial appeal.
The ps3 has all the major commercial titles this year, titles that everyone has heard about, titles that everyone knows about and titles that everyone will buy no matter what.
    Kinda like halo 3 😉

MGS4 will sell at least as much as MGS3 (4 million), if not as much as MGS2 (7 million), although maybe only half of the sales will be this year. That’s a pretty big “niche” if you ask me. 😉

I’m not going to be surprised if MGS4 is the biggest game in the series. It’s going to receive a lot more hype than any other MGS game, it will feature an online starter pack, and it has an American producer attached to help tweak the game for a US market.

It’s too early to get excited about the big games for 2008. Many of them are going to slip – I’m not going to be surprised if Fable 2, Alan Wake, Infamous and GT5 all slide into Q1/2 of 2009 (FFXIII goes without saying), and on the other side, there are many games we don’t know about yet. Maybe Team ICO’s game and Heavy Rain will still make 2008, for example.

So far, Ninja Gaiden 2 and LittleBigPlanet are the games I’m most keen on.

@Fox1, Grid looks awesome but I don’t think a racing game is ever really a contender for GOTY…. I do want it though 😀

System selling exclusives are not the big deal it was in the previous generation – MS put a lot of marketing and hype behind original Xbox titles because they were fighting for survival. Compare the success of COD4,AC,GH3 with UT3 & HS to reiterate my assertions. The reason why MGS4 , KZ2 and LBP are getting so much hype is because it is far more important to Sony’s success in terms of selling consoles as well as much needed revenue from the gaming division – in much the same way as Halo was important to MS.

@ JimBob – I doubt very much that MGS4 will do 4mio off a projected installed base of 12-13 million especially when taking into account the dissapointing sale of PS3 software in NA and Japan.

@ Sony Fanboys – Yes I know about RROD and that Halo sucks and that PS3 domination has begun – discounting the Wii off course because its not really a proper gaming console.
