Valve has a penchant for creating smash hit video games, even if the tech they use to do so is a little outdated. If there’s one single thing of theirs that fans are clamouring for though, it’s something new in the Half-Life universe. Could the perpetually teased Episode 3 be getting a Gamescom reveal?
Voice actress Ellen McLain, the voice behind Portal’s GlaDOS, husband, also a Valve voice actor, recently tweeted that the pair "is going in Tuesday for a new game and more Portal work." in addition to Portal’s homicidal AI, Ellen’s previously been the voice of the Overwatch in Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2: Episode One and Half-Life 2: Episode Two, as well as voiced the announcer in Team Fortress 2. We know that Valve will be showing off its Warcraft 3-mod-made full game DotA2 at Gamescom, and her tweet could allude to that game, but could she have inadvertently outed something else?
Could we finally be getting news of Half-Life 2 Episode 3? I’m going to maintain a bit of sceptical optimism, but dammit it’s really time for some new Half-Life! We last saw the franchise with the release of Half-Life 2 Episode 2 in 2007 as part of the incredible Orange Box that contained Half-Life 2, its two episodic expansions, Team Fortress 2 and the amazing Portal, which recently saw its sequel top the rankings in both critical and commercial success.
After the long cycle we’ve waited already, it doesn’t seem too much of a stretch that we could see Episode 3 in a few years – developed by Gearbox.
