Is it game over for modern combat shooters?

Gameover

For the first time in a very long time, Call of Duty’s star is waning; reviews of the latest game in the blockbuster franchise haven’t been especially good. Here’s the thing.; neither have reviews for its biggest competitor, Battlefield 4. Are people getting tired of modern combat?

Of course, reviews don’t exactly correlate to sales – but it seems that Battlefield’s 4 sales haven’t been quite as high as expected. The game was beaten in UK sales charts by Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. And somehow, I really don’t think Ghosts is going to match the sales of the last Call of Duty, Black Ops 2, which would effectively destroy the tradition of each successive Call of Duty making more money than the last one.

It could well be that people are waiting for next generation consoles, so aren’t buying the current versions, but I think there’s more to it than that. I think the masses, the general populace, is growing weary of the modern combat shooter.

If you’ve been playing games for a long time, you’ll know that shooters have been popular for ages – but that that popularity comes and goes in waves. While not the first examples of the genre, Wolfenstein 3D and Doom kicked off the genre’s popularity before to many Doom clones made people pretty tired of the genre.

Though there were a handful of exceptional FPs in the interim, the genre really only gained real prominence again a few years later with the releases of Duke Nukem 3D and Quake and after that (and games like Goldeneye 007 and Half Life!), the genre’s popularity never quite went away, but certainly diminished until Halo re-popularised them on consoles, shortly before World War 2 games became all the rage.

It wasn’t really until Battlefield 2 and Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare that the modern combat sub-genre became popular within the mainstream, and now, years later, I think they’re on the way out, much like World War II shooters became passé.

What do you think? Is it time for something new? Are we all tired of this modern combat nonsense? do things like Titanfall and Destiny excite you more than the prospect of, say, Battlefield 5 or Modern Warfare 4?

Ooh wait… This reminds me of a joke…

There was this guy named Van that suffered from extreme headaches and one day he finally found a specialist that said that he could can cure his headaches. The bad news is that it will require castration.

Van was shocked and depressed. He wondered if he had anything to live for. He couldn’t concentrate long enough to answer, but decided he had no choice but to go under the knife.

When he left the hospital he was without a headache for the first time in 20 years, but he felt like he was missing an important part of himself. As he walked down the street, he realized that he felt like a different person. He could make a new beginning and live a new life. He saw a men’s clothing store & thought, “That’s what I need – a new suit.”

He entered the shop and told the salesman, “I’d like a new suit.” The elderly tailor eyed him briefly and said, “Let’s see … size 44 long.” Van laughed, “That’s right, how did you know?” “Been in the business 60 years!” Van tried on the suit. It fit perfectly.

As Van admired himself in the mirror, the salesman asked, “How about a new shirt?” Van thought for a moment and then said, “Sure.” The salesman eyed Van and said, “Let’s see, 34 sleeve & 16-1/2 neck.” Again, Van was surprised, “That’s right, how did you know?” “Been in the business 60 years!”

Van tried on the shirt, and it fit perfectly. As Van adjusted the collar in the mirror, the salesman asked, “How about new shoes?” Van was on a roll and said, “Sure.” The salesman eyed Van’s feet and said, “Let’s see … 9-1/2 E.” Van was astonished, “That’s right, how did you know?” “Been in the business 60 years!”

Van tried on the shoes and they fit perfectly. Van walked comfortably around the shop and the salesman asked, “How about some new underwear?” Van thought for a second and said, “Sure.” The salesman stepped back, eyed Van’s waist and said, “Let’s see… size 36.”

Van laughed. “Ah ha! I got you! I’ve worn size 34 since I was 18 years old.” The salesman shook his head, “You can’t wear a size 34. A size 34 underwear would press your testicles up against the base of your spine and give you one hell of a headache.

Destiny man! 100%. That’ll be the next FPS I buy. Far Cry 3 was also great, a combination sandbox FPS. It did something different. I think you should really specify that it’s more a multiplayer issue, as there have been some great non modern combat FPS to be released this last year or so.

Then is Destiny really an appropriate comparison? I don’t know, if you like the genre will it ever really fade though? I mean, people still love WoW. Its lost its mainstream appeal, but people still love it. If you isolate just the modern combat players, then you really are wasting an article, because 95% of them will probably be fans still. Its more the gamers who don’t stick to a genre exclusively that are worn out and just want something different.

        That’s my thought anyway.

It’s a persistent online world, there’s LOADS of bot AI programming. And you technically CAN play single player, you just solo all the content. That’s not what the game really wants you to do though. But it’s right there, if you want.

you think single player gaming is dead? i absolutely hate online games and so does half of the people i know if not more. alot of these games dont take the time to properly make there online work then they abandon the game and you get stuck with a pos game that dont work right and your lucky if you can even get all your friends in the same server without everyone getting disconnected. i have 15 games stuck at 80+% completion because of the mp trophys that i cant even get anyone to play.

Agreed. I don’t do online MP. I hate it. It’s bad for me. It’s not convenient. And I won’t buy a game that forces me to be online to play it.

There are still a few publishers that focus on single player first, hopefully that won’t change.

if they keep making the button configurations as fucking stupid as they have been and the controls so janky and sluggish it will be. i see one person playing battlefield 4 and 2 people playing cod ghosts out of 100 on my ps3 list. when cod and battlefield use to get released i would see my entire buddy list playing one of the two. people are getting fedup with the bullshit. the recycling of idea that people dont like, and discarding of the good ideas is frusterating. not to mention games never working right and having the same god damn problems it had on every other launch. and then sometimes never getting patched. some kid who works stocking shelfs for a month saves up and buys a 60$ game after he pays his bills doesnt want to deal with a broke fucking game. and he doesnt wanna deal with a entire server of people who cant get a kill because the guns have so much recoil that you cant kill someone in front of your face

in the past year or 2 i started trophy hunting and trying all games out there. i use to be picky and only picked the big titles that i knew were good. after these titles releasing broke game after broke game and changing things that make sense into things that make absolutely no sense i started playing low budget games, games with low graphics, games that were different and took risks. i found myself having a shitload more fun playing these titles. i loved aliens colonial marines even though everyone else hated it, i love walking dead survival instinct even though people complain about the graphics, i love shooting games where the gun doesnt over exagerate the recoil and bounce like a ping pong ball. most of all i love games that work. i had so much fun with wolfentein and singularity. meanwhile twisted metal overheats my ps3 and my trophys are glitched on it. i have every single battlefield game, except for b4, i got so sick and tired of how much they changed the games controls and options i had no desire to even play it this time around

I’m pretty much the military enthusiast and what both the COD and MOH had provided me was a 1st person perspective into plausible realities of war.
Realism is key, and any enthusiast or none alike will agree, that the first releases of then MOH and later the COD release, had pushed the benchmark in providing an experience of a lifetime, with much success I might add.
With the release of Battlefield 2 and the recent Battlefield 3, players were emerged in yet another action packed adrenaline pumped ride of realism, with destructible world, thanks to the then new frostbite engine.
This brings me to Battlefield 4, witch to my experience and any one else’s , is pretty much a rip-off for your expectations and what you may think be a reasonable price you pay for games these days.
With the huge successes that Battlefield 3 had to offer, it being gritty, real, to date with current political event, we had something with a decent story line, greater cast of characters, without being spoiled as a “holly wood film experience.
Battlefield 4, sadly is more of an action packed holly word movie experience, kinda “America safes the day, again” arrogance of character depth more than gaming experience, with over the top scripted events, explosions that make up shallow character personalities.
Don’t get me wrong though, the facial and graphical achievements in the latest release is indeed some eye candy, though the story being predictable, over scripted, prescript leaves the player stuck in a make believe world , that part feels right , part feels wrong.
Being a huge fan of the franchise, I was honestly disappointed in my gaming experience.
I opt obviously for ultra-realism, hence I’m much the fan of all ARMA (Armored assault) franchise as any other military enthusiast may be, though what both Battlefield and MOH had to offer was darn fun and hardcore in one package, somehow, and sadly, the game developers recently had turned into a somewhat “cash cow” surprise, that did not maintain the loyalties of realism other than hinged up in graphics and a holly wood movie experience, nothing more.

I was in the British Army for 5 years. Got 2 medals. 1 for Bosnia and 1 for peacekeeping in Cyprus. All I did was Guard duty and drink drink drink drink drink drink drink.

We would never dream of firing our weapons because we would just get locked up for murder according to all of these modern laws.

I was not infantry or special forces. So I cant really say if these games are a close representation but I can say that EA and their MOH IS true to military voice procedure. They did have Andy Mc Nab to help advise with the MOH games and the sound of the bullets was as real as they come.

MOH owns COD and the most authentic shooter that I ever played was Medal of Honor (2010 video game). It was based on the true events of Op Anaconda

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Anaconda

A pity it never sold to well. Then the work model changed to focus on on-line gaming.

      Game on 🙂

Arma has more authenticity in its loading screen than both BF and CoD combined.

This is why I vary my gaming with Quake Live, ME 3 MP and BF4.

And review scores? Sorry we have all learned that scores are not to be trusted. 😉

Maybe Titanfall will answer this question. On PC at least.

Titanfall is Battlefield with mechs. And double jumps. It’s like a mash between BF, UT, and Mech Warrior.

It was bound to happen, remember how tired we all were of World War 2 shooters, and how excited we were for COD 4? I loved COD 4, I loved the single player, and the multiplayer hooked me. It kept me entertained for months. What I didn’t like about this generation was the over-abundance of Corridor Shooters, and I think Battlefield 4 did a great job this time round. It’s still a linear game, but at least it’s not one corridor, followed by another, as you race towards another checkpoint.

Of course, what does the future hold? Futuristic shooters? Maybe, but I’m still holding out hope that someone will take a gander at the greatest war of the 20th century, THE FIRST WORLD WAR! It’s a war that fascinated me ever since I was a little kid, and I think we’re ready to experience it.

Throw in some mustard gas, biplanes and tactical trench warfare, across a massive cloud-tastic map, with multiple objectives… Comeon Battlefield 1917… MAKE IT HAPPEN!

Yeah, sit around in a trench with your feet rotting. You then proceed to climb over the wall and walk at a slow steady pace while the enemy gets to fire upon you with machine guns from prepared positions. Sounds awesome.

The catch no controller support just Kinect.

First 3 missions is you marching, then followed by line on line fire fight where you to simulate musket loading actions.

I think you kinda missed something very important, where you think FPS diminished until Overrated Halo made it big again. Fact is it was always going strong when Counter Strike took over from Quake.

I agree, Halo is overrated. It’s claim to fame is that devs and publishers realised that you can have an FPS on the consoles and throw in multiplayer. I think time and nostalgia has warped people’s memories of what Halo was, and while I enjoyed Halo 2 for what it was, it just wasn’t Counter Strike.

I agree that this direction of TitanFall and Destiny is where it’s going to be at. Things need to change up a bit now, TitanFall isn’t that big a shift, but this new era of connectivity and possibiliets of open world type shooter experiences that offer dynamic experiences is really something that could really keep us interested again.

As for CoD: Again and Battlefield: BeenThereDoneThat… they need to do a bit of a shift as well. I’m a big fan of Battlefield and even I feel like with 4 Im just playing a tweaked version of the last one. Who knows, maybe the next Battlefield will offer truly open warfare. Bigass maps, zillions of players moving freely between areas etc.

Fun times ahead, hopefully. Because yes, this modern shooter thing has grown very, very tired indeed.

    To be quite frankly honest.

I’m not tired of modern shooters, I’m tired of the same s*** different game name. No story, or vague story written by one person or it is some spinoff from COD or BF4. Tired of it, no innovation, no original content anymore. Look at BF4, look at COD, they all the damn same, same BS just slightly different worlds and MAYBE a different looking main character if you’re lucky.

Wouldn’t mind something in the vein of Heretic. Remember having fun playing that after Doom.

Yeah modern combat shooters have been milked a bit. Also a bit hard to get innovative without doing something like a modern combat in space unless that’s already been done.

I bought cod: ghosts and enjoy it, but i don’t play online and get burnt out over the course of the year waiting for the next one. everyone seems to want something new and different while still remaining the exact same and it gets tired and boring, even if what you’re getting is actually what you have been asking for, look at world of warcraft, there will remain a core group of dedicated players, but like everything, the series will peak and start to become less desirable, by the time halo 3 came out most people I know bought it because they played the other 3, and when cod:mw came it we were ready for a change and that was the answer. destiny has been the first game i have seen previews for in a long time and said “fuck yes I want that!”, halo 4 was cool, halo 5 looks like it will fun too, and a much needed industry break from so much “modern” realistic shooters.

why would anyone take serious a dumb fuck who buys cod only for SP and says halo 4 and 5 milking machine are great lol. What a sad fuck. You are the reason Activision sells the same sht product over and over again and makes profit. you shouldnt even be allowed to buy games with that brain of yours the size of a nutshell.

Really dude? calm the fuck down and get over yourself tough guy, your nerd rage is showing and it’s a little pathetic; your so cool for insulting me because my OPINION differs from yours, how incredibly open minded and insightful you must be.

I did not say halo 4 was a great game, I said it was fun, I played it couch co-op with my wife and its an easy enough game that she can do well and not get frustrated so yes, we enjoyed playing halo 4 and I hope that halo 5 will be fun too, it probably wont be great, or groundbreaking, but master chief and warthogs are still awesome in my book regardless of what your mainstream trend hive mind wants to think. I agree, cod games since mw have been focused on on-line play, but due to shit internet I cannot play it online, but I can still enjoy playing the games even though I don’t have to tolerate hearing know it all children like yourself screeching about nonsense for the duration of the games, and to be honest I am not an overly skilled fps player and really don’t see the point in paying money to being insulted while trying to have relax and have fun, I play to have fun, because you know, its a game, I had my fill of online shooters with the first gow, i’m over it now.
