Is Nintendo in denial about the Wii U’s failure?

InDenial

I love Nintendo’s Wii U; Nintendo’s first-party games are undeniably gems, almost always polished to perfection. Just this weekend, I reacquainted myself with Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros, two of my very favourite games from the last year. Still, it’s easy to be underwhelmed by the quantity of great games hitting Nintendo’s machine. It’s not helped by the fact that the Wii U still isn’t selling well, even though it’s played most of its cards. It’s selling even fewer units than the ill-fated (but also awesome) Gamecube did at this point in its lifecycle. Is Nintendo in denial? Is it time for Nintendo to face facts?

Perhaps. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata believes there’s still room for the console to grow.

“I believe the Wii U business still has considerable room for growth, as a number of software titles that are compatible with the console are slated for release in 2015,” Iwata told Nikkei when asked about flat Wii sales.

Nintendo’s own 3DS rules the roost in Japan, where Iwata believes gamers favour handhelds. That’s not the case in the West though, which is where Iwata believes the Wii U’s fortunes could be changed.

“The way Japanese gamers enjoy video games is different from their counterparts in the West. More and more Japanese gamers play on smartphones and 3DS hand-held devices. On the other hand, a majority of gamers in Europe and the US still connect their consoles to TVs and play them on a bigger screen. In the global video game market, game titles for consoles are still dominant, and that market is much larger,” he said.

While Iwata’s bullish on the Wii U, perpetual Nintendo-hater Michael Pachter says Nintendo needs to pack it in. Speaking to Game Informer, Pachter says Nintendo needs a new console that can compete with Microsoft and Sony’s ones if it wants to stay in the game.

“I think that they are still in denial about the Wii U failure,” he said. “You keep seeing this stat so we’re up 82 per cent – yeah, 40,000 units went to 70,000 units. Who cares? You’re still trailing the other guys by a mile.”

“They need a new console that’s competitive with Xbox One and PlayStation 4. If Xbox can sell at $349 Nintendo could make it and sell for $249. They won’t because they still live in that old console world where they think they need to make a profit on the hardware. That means if they make a competitive console it would be more expensive,” he said.

I’d like to believe it’s still too really to call, especially with an incredible looking new Zelda on the way. Beyond that and Splatoon though, there’s very little exciting on the horizon for the Wii U – and a blank release slate is hardly the sort of thing to get people to buy consoles.

The West is fueled by propaganda and ignorance. In the West it’s all about better and new. So blinded that they can’t even see it’s the same shit they buying over and over with a different label on it.

Wii U has no chance in the West. If Wii U can re-brand it self and go after Europe, they might have a chance. But they need games.
The problem with the majority of console gamers is that they content just buying and playing the sports and Call of Duty every year. That’s why it’s so easy for these new single player games to fail because it’s not COD and it’s not sport games.

Wii U just needs games. Proper video games. Not these modern gaming bullshit. Bayonetta 2 – 2014 – Game Of The Year. Bayonetta is like the essence of video games. The West will never be able to understand that. Dogg my PS4 is so powerful man.

Out of these 3 consoles. Wii U will make your gaming soul happy. Buy a Wii U and re-discover your passion for video games.

whatever dude. You obviously have some issues. Generalising to the point you do is very derogatory. Yes sure COD and sports do sell the most, that doesnt make them bad by the way(not to my taste though), and there are also lots of other albeit smaller game categories that do thrive in the west, its just in percentage terms that they are smaller than the AAA game titles, but are still enjoyed and sell well in actual numbers.

Chill out dude, you come across as defensive and pretty overdramatic.

            Also,

The Wii U has plenty of games!

            Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze,
            Pikmin 3
            Super Mario 3D World,
            Super Smash Brothers Wii U,
            Mario Kart 8,
            Bayonetta 1 & 2
Legend of Zelda Wind Waker HD
            Captain Toad Treasure Tracker
New Super Mario Bros Wii U

Including some decent Third Party -albeit- older games.

and even more coming soon like,

            Devil’s Third
            Splatoon,
            StarFox Wii U
            Yoshi Wooly World
            Kirby and the Rainbow Curse
            Xenoblade Chronicles X

…And a brand new and spanking Legend of Zelda Wii U!

            Drool.

(P.S. Also Mario Maker and Mario Party 10 for some folks; not my thing though).

What Nintendo ought to do is to change the way they market the Wii U.
They need to spend money on Wii U advertisements and start marketing it them towards a wider audience that includes teenagers and mature audiences. Nintendo has always been a family friendly company but some of us are already in our late 20’s (I owned an NES back in their hey-day) but the average video game player averages out somewhere between their mid 20’s and early 30’s. So why alienate your older fans? On top of that, Nintendo need to look into having better more competitive hardware in their foreseable future in order to entice better Third-Party support. I’m all for gameplay over graphics (The Wii U has great HD visuals in my opinion) but a lack of Third Party support means losing customers and business. In addition, Nintendo has to rectify their online account system! I don’t want to lose all my digital games if my Wii U dies! Either way, despite all of this the Wii U is probably one of the best (if not the best) Nintendo console to date. It would be a shame to see it not live up to its full potential.

out of that whole list of games that came out i am only interested in the new zelda ,xenoblade and Super Mario Bros. not worth buying a console just for 3 games. i wish nintendo would give up the console business and become a 3rd party publisher.

Bayonetta 2, Devil’s Third, Splatoon did not peak your interest? Or the Legend of Zelda Wind Waker HD, Mario Kart 8 or Smash Brothers Wii U? Hm, you sure you like games, my friend? Because those are the cream of the crop! haha, but I keed! In my opinion, the Wii U has fantastic games. The best multiplayer I’ve experienced with friends by far. Very fun stuff (laugh-out-loud-punch-your-friend-in-the-shoulder fun!) and Its’ up to you to decide if you want to try them out or not. It’s okay though, everybody has different tastes but I’d really suggest for you to try them out before you make up your mind over the system. It’s brilliant. I’m dying for Nintendo’s E3!

to be honest most of there game’s are to childish, casual or short for a person of my age. i like a good story with good graphics and lots of room to explore in my games. mario is about as far as i can go as childish and the only reason i accept that is because i grew up playing mario but zelda is a different beast the story itself is worth playing. that brings up a issue i have with nintendo. its bs we only get one new zelda game per console although it’s more popular than mario with teen’s and adults. yet mario get’s tons of releases per console proving there only going for little kids and the casual player. they need to step up and produce a next gen console and get 3rd party support back or become a 3rd party distributor them selves. i prefer the later myself

Thank you for your response comment. And pretty overdramatic, is how I do comments on here.

When I said re-brand i meant change their corporate image and change the way they advertise. I do believe that people still feel that Wii U is a kids console. Why would an adult buy a Wii U for an adult. Bayonetta 2, that’s why.

“On top of that, Nintendo need to look into having better more competitive hardware”
It’s that sentiment why the West will never adopt the Wii U. Nintendo won’t compete hardware wise, with the other competitors. To compete with them means selling at a lose. Wii U was cutting it close when it was released. Wii U + one game = making a profit per console. When Nintendo does make a big loss per console to compete with the others, then it will be the end for Nintendo.

Anyway. thanks for a nice human like reply.

I’ve been saying the same about Nintendo games for a while now. Nintendo games make for happy, fun gaming. AAA games on PC and the other 2 major consoles are far too serious.

I’d love to own a Wii-U and I’d probably buy one before I buy a PS4 or XB1 simply because Nintendo does gaming right… FUN.

I tried to do a, why Wii U won’t sell well in the West. But that small part, instead of getting a response of why Wii U can sell well in the West, it turned into typical bullshit.

Of the three “current gen consoles”, the only one I’ve actually owned was the WiiU. The thing is, and this is my honest opinion, the WiiU is a piece of shit. Nintendo’s 1st party games however, are amazing. I think that is were people get it wrong. We don’t need “pro WiiU” comments, we need “pro WiiU games” comments! 🙂 I get that you can’t separate the two as WiiU games = WiiU console currently, but that is what needs to change.

I wasn’t saying your comment was wrong, only that I think the generalisation was incorrect.

The crazy thing is the Wii-U is the Wii with a Wii bit of extra ram and a change in cpu and gpu. It’s exactly what they made before with the original Wii. Microsoft and Sony went with 8 Gigs of ram, it’s not the same as their previous consoles. The Wii is a tri core 2 gigs of ram machine doing Mario and Zelda games every time with no support from 3rd party developers. It’s a stagnant mostly first party machine.

I have to say, despite as unpleasant as what you say sounds, the evidence is out there. I own all 8th gen and a gaming rig. I can see how the other 2 consoles (PS4 and XB1) are constantly playing to the lowest common denominator with glitchy big budget games with shallow gameplay, yearly regurgitation and tons of dlc that should have been part of the original game. Don’t get me started on micro-transactions!! People talk about the drought of Wii U games but the games released on the other 2 have hardly been setting the world on fire. I have to say that you can see the love and attention that has gone into the development of many Wii U games. I can’t say the same of PS4 and XB1.

It is weird in a way because the Nintendoom merchants predicted the death of Nintendo over a year ago, then it basically achieved a massive turnaround in 2014 with simply great games. What the Nintendoom merchants did not predict was the utter lack of worthy games on their own consoles. So instead we are stuck with the same old CoD, AC and sports games and HD or 7th gen remakes released every year which are usually forgotten or in the bargain bins a month after release, despite all the billions spent on development and marketing. The cynical removal of backwards compatibility was to keep the consoles rolling during lean times. That has become very apparent. We wonder why the industry is in decline in the West.

Just saying I personally love Nintendo and own close to every console and will buy a Wii U to complete my Nintendo collection as soon as they drop the price to 199. I know alot of gamers in America and Canada who like me pick up every Nintendo console when they become affordable. And Nintendo is the handheld king my two favorite handhelds of all time are the Nintendo DS and the Sega Nomad. The Wii u just is not an advanced enough system to be your go to current Gen console. It is great, the controller is amazing even if the tech in the touch screen is ancient the ability to play games while others in the home watch the tv is awesome sauce and the 3DS’s glasses free 3D is amazing. But to really sell more consoles they need more third party games. And more advanced hardware.to attract third party games. Of course this is coming from a guy that played the original pitfall and Donkey Kong for two hours last night on the Intellivision. Oh and some Bonk on the turbo duo.

That explains the fake hype over PS4 and even Xbox One….there were no real interesting games that justify to buy them over their previous generations or Wii U …but then people lined up like followers just to get expensive consoles with boring repetitive FPS and team sports games….and the media was paid to promote the console Wars and get people excited …while the Wii U offers great gaming experience great gamepad and motions control …great games better price and retro compatible with virtual console…diversity and polished games with practically no buggs….the. the only thing the media focused is the specs of the Wii U….you see the media the thirth parties and the so called business analysts are easily corrupted….especially in the West…in Japan this my not work because Japanese know the difference between good games and fake hype….

I like that Michael Pachter speaks with such certainty. It makes it easier to dismiss his words.

Time for SEGA and Nintendo to combine forces as a software developer.

    Michael Pachter, now there’s a joke…

Seriously, the only two consoles competing against each other is PS4 and XBone. The Wii-U is on it’s own and will either be picked up in addition to one of the others, not at all, or exclusively.

It’s very unlikely that somebody will buy a PS4 and a Xbone because they have exactly the same games on them, but the Wii-U has it’s own games which aren’t available on any other platform.

Exactly! Why does it need to compete with the others? Why can’t it just exist on it’s own?

Michael Pachter is as usual full of shit…

How many times he was right? I could count that on my single hand and I am not counting stuff he said that were obvious to anyone, actual legit things that no-one expected and he was right.

Anyway, he is like nearly always wrong and can’t believe that there are still people trust him, he and those people need to go back to 1990’s because… Man, they are outdated.

If Wii U was a failure then it would’t sell, it would’t have good games and games would’t sell on it, but they do.

Only Zelda and Splatoon look exciting? Xenoblade Chronicles X, Devil’s Third, Project Guard, Project Giant Robot, Mario Party 10, Mario Maker, and Star Fox must not exist then… interesting…

Looking at the monthly top 10 console games sales in North America, its not hard to see that Nintendo is on their own wavelength than what the western mass audience wants. I’m totally fine with that. I’m in that group of people that is so sick of the FPS and sports games. Nintendo has their own stellar cast of franchises and characters and found its niche market a long time ago. Its not popular…so what? They’re still making money and above all else, amazing gaming experiences.

Id think so….but what can they do. The tablet idea probably made the console a little bit too expensive. And not taking into consideration that other companies would move into next gen shortly after their move into the current

Most likely this will have a longer lifespan than Cube did. It’s not dead, but hasn’t taken off either. The Cube got only five years in its lifetime, the explosive Wii sales ensured it would die fast. This could potentially catch Cube if the next doesn’t sell like Wii did. Otherwise, this will easily pass Dreamcast, a true “failed” system in terms of market share.

I don’t c why not sell the wii u at actual buying price. And to those who think xbx 1 n ps4 are the same as there past gen with a different label wb the wii u? It’s a wii with a fckn u at the end stupid.
It’s sepcs n hardware are only better then a xbox 360 n PS3 by a little margin! So why sell it for 300/350 it’s worth only 200/230$ in my eyes n apparently they don’t want to sell it without a bundle n the white one isn’t even at retail. The one that’s what? 8 GB is worth 150$ but how can u honestly compare the feature a xbox one can do to that of a wii u. Yes the Nintendo company is in denial but stay stubborn all day. It won’t change as the only people buying it are those who hate microsoft or hate sony only kids are buying it or wanting it n when it’s kids they buy it asap grown folks are patient in terms of buying a next gen system n party people know where the guns n guns at. Not on the wii U mad bro?

Don’t feel sorry go drink some milk son. What I said in a short version is the wii u is only worth more then a 360 PS3 so it should sell for at least a 100$ then It goes for.

I own every system including and a first day release of the wii u.

Nintendo is in a major delusional state. They are still locked in the past and if they don’t remove their heads from their ass then they are going the way of the dodo bird.

    Games-

First party games are great and done right. However even with a new coat of paint hashing out the same IPs over and over gets old. Bayonetta 2 as good as it is… isnt worth buying a system for.

New Ips… where are they at? They have few games out and next to no third party support they should be creating new IPs and yet they are just redoing the old ones again. Splatoon was announced over a year ago that we are still waiting. I love Zelda but guess what, playing the same game with a new coat of paint gets old.

    Hardware-

Hardware is only a slight factor. An old term west used is “bang for the buck”. If you take my wii u, ps4, xbone, and pc away and tell me I have to start over with little or no money I will buy the ps4 or xbox, why? Because the price of one game gets me a subscription that gives me two + free games a month
for a year. What does Nintendo offer in the price range? I also can get all the streaming apps and a blue ray player to watch movies with my purchase. Nintendo has use of special disc and encoding, so no player.

    The company-

The state of the wii u isn’t anyone’s but Nintendo’s fault. The day after I pick up the wii u and told a few people I got one, NO one knew what it was or what I was talking about. Nintendo piss poor advertising is at fault. Did they just assume that since the wii sold so well we would instantly know about the wii u. Just like the lack of games from 3rd party support is also their fault. If they didn’t make everything proprietary and have to be Nintendo certificated, then more 3rd parties would be willing to come to Nintendo for games. Did you know that Microsoft and Sony talked to devs about what they wanted to see in the design of their new systems before starting it? Can you guess which company made their system without talking to a 3rd party? That’s right Nintendo. If they want to be seen as something else in the “west” or anywhere for that matter. Then they need to do some MAJOR changing. Not only on their games, a competitive system but cut all the BS with the devs having to jump through hopes to made a game.

I personal love Mario’s 3d World and Mario karts, Pikman, Nintendo land and Bayonetta 2. Super Smash not so much, likely the new coat of paint problem.

What is really sad to see is next system will not have my support for it right at release. I will wait a while to see what they are doing first and maybe even skip their next gen which will be the first time ever.

The only one that is in denial is the stupid Michael Pachter……he needs to shut up because he does not know anything about gaming ….he is still stuck in 2013….gaming industry moves fast…2014 was a great year for the Wii U and 2015 is promising with all of the great games comming soon….but pachter is in denial he still has that hate towards Nintendo….or he is paid to say stupid theories that will not come true but will scare some people away….Wii U does not need to be the 1st console for sales of this generation to be successful… it has it’s own niche or market that is slightly different than the rest….in 2014 …Nintendo showed the world what it can do with it…so the sales started to pick up …then the idiot pachter must have been in panic because his stupid predictions and theories were going down…so he decided to invent a story that Iwata and Nintendo are in denial….Media shoud seriously consider to stop using this clown as a reference because he just cause move damage to the industry in general on the long run….

Wii U still has way better games than Xbox and PS4 combined. The next console will be out at the end of 2017 and will have the opportunity to be way better than the other two. I think they can make the next console 10x more powerful than the PS4. It seems likely because the new console will be developed in the West, for the first time.
