Dinklebot vs Nolan North Destiny Ghost

Destiny 2.0 has finally kicked off year two of the shared world shooter, with a staggering 17GB update prepping the game for The Taken King next week (among other things). One brand new feature the patch brings is the booting of Peter Dinklage in favour of Uncharted stalwart Nolan North – who has taken over duties as the voice of your AI companion Ghost. Does he manage to do a better job than the often wooden Lannister? Yes and no.

In a comparison video courtesy of Polygon (and first-world internet), you can see North and Dinklage going tongue to tongue on some of Destiny’s most famous lines. What it proves is that Dinklage wasn’t struggling with voice-overs in particular, but instead struggling with what can only be considered as bad writing. Nothing screams this more than one particular line, where even North struggles to convincingly say “Be careful it’s power is … dark.”

Personally, I never cared much for Dinklage’s performance in the game, and I care even less for North’s. In fact, I don’t think it’s a particular improvement, with the otherwise exceptional voice actor seemingly struggling just as much when it comes to voicing the odd and sometimes clumsy Ghost. We all know now that Bungie chose this route not for performance but rather because of Dinklage’s busy schedule, but I don’t think they’re going to be cut much slack this time around either.

Especially when it seems that Destiny’s story (and inherently, its dialogue) seems like it could’ve been far better than it currently is. Regardless of that, Destiny 2.0 brings a wealth of welcome changes to the game that grinding fans are going to absolutely adore. Just try ignore the familiar Ghost droning for yet another year.

The amount of Metal Gear Solid V articles haven’t exactly been zero, as was the case before Batman and The Witcher… The big releases are getting fewer and further in between, so the PR side is becoming better. And Bungie knows how to create hype. I am waiting on the inevitable oooh Destiny still sucks can’t believe I bought this expansion and I will never again buy anything Destiny related, and low and behold 6 months from now they buy the new expansion and so the circle is complete… Destiny is big business and it is a big game, whether you play it or not. I love Destiny and I love the articles on Destiny…

I’m glad I’m not alone here.
Am I the only one who thinks Ghost sounds like Guilty Spark from Halo now?

Considering Bungie made both games, I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s what they were going for. That or C-3PO.

On the NolanBot issue, he sounds weird for sure. it will take a while to get use to that voice for Ghost… But my level 2 Warlock is ready to run through the whole thing sometime this and next month so I should get used to it sooner or later… I hope

You see… When it comes to how a character should be portrayed, even if it’s only the voice, writing and creative input should both play off of each other, a few examples such as Michael Ironside in Splintercell is still one of the best, James MccAffrey in Max Payne, Troy Baker in TLOU, Steven Ogg in GTA V, the list goes on… If a character is well written, the actor should feel at home doing anything in that environment, whether it be a fully fledged human or a bot hanging in the air, that type of play is what makes for great portrayals in games… Having changed to North, after what has been described as one of the flattest stories in a long time, won’t help, but yay hype train, luckily I don’t play this…
