Is Rare returning to glory in the next gen?

Rare

Rare is – or should I say was – one of my favourite studios in gaming generations past. They gave me some of my best gaming experiences, with delightful Nintendo titles like Battletoads, Donkey Kong Country, Goldeneye 64, Perfect Dark and Banjo Kazooie and of course, Killer Instinct. This generation though, under Microsoft, they’ve released little of genuine interest, having mostly been relegated to making avatar stuff and Kinect Sports.

If job postings are anything to go by (and they often are) then the company might be trying to reclaim its former glory. It’s looking for a senior product manager to help them create “multiple AAA future console releases.”

In a (now curiously gone) job listing spotted by videogaming internet super-sleuth Superannuation, it sems Rare is looking for somebody with experience the action/adventure or FPS genres.

“Whilst continual development of their core releases will be maintained, the successful candidate will be joining at a time where the studio is looking to move into new areas and develop new IPs for future platforms,” the listing read before it disappeared in to the ether.”You will have a successful history of releasing exceptional AAA games and these will ideally be in the Action/Adventure or FPS genre but this is not essential.”

It suggests that though Rare will likely continue to develop titles in the Kinect sports series (and the requisite Avatar rubbish that comes with it), it means they’re also looking to make some proper games for the next generation. If those games happen to include Kameo 2, a proper sequel to Perfect Dark, and even a nice new Viva Pinata (Hey! Don’t judge me!) I’m willing to forget about all the casual fluff, Rare.
