Insomniac’s Resistance series didn’t get the love it deserved, as far as I’m concerned. The first game, a launch title for the PlayStation 3, pit an alternate history 1950’s cabal of US and UK troops against an invading alien horde. While they were critically well received, they didn’t do particularly well at retail. Perhaps it was the lack of innovation, perhaps it was the fact that Killzone looked better. Whatever the reason, it saw long-time Sony partner and now multiplatform chaps Insomniac abandon the series. It may be coming back.
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Limited has filed a trademark application for “Resistance”, specifically related to “video games and electronic games services provided by means of the Internet.”
While it’s possible, and entirely likely, that the company is just looking to protect its trademarks, it could signal a reboot (or perhaps a – ugh – remaster) of the series.
I’d be okay with that.
Though the PlayStation Vita exclusive Resistance: Burning Skies is one of the laziest, most god-awful games to grace the system, the last PlayStation 3 entry, Resistance 3, was an excellent post-apocalyptic shooter that recalled great shooters like Half-Life 2. It also, as you’d expect from Insomniac, had some of the very best guns to feature in a game.
If a new Resistance does happen, it likely won’t be under Insomniac’s stewardship. “We won’t be making any more Resistances,” Insomniac CEO Ted Price told VG247 in 2012. A year previous, Insomniac’s Marcus Smith suggested another developer might take the reins.
“We’ve got a lot of different places for the universe to go, so I could certainly see the series going to another developer. I’m sure Sony would want to find a high calibre developer to do a good offering. I don’t think they’d hand the franchise over to somebody who is going to screw it up.”
Does Sony have a studio that could do the Insomniac series justice? There’s Guerrilla Cambridge – who managed to make one of the better Killzone games in the Vita’s Killzone: Mercenary.
In all likelihood, it’s little more than Sony protecting its trademarks and if we do get a new release of Resistance, it’ll be yet another cash-grabbing remaster.

Loved the Resistance series but No. 3’s graphics made me twitch. Grainy textures, jaggies and more grainy textures. Resistance: FOL was my first PS3 game and I loved it. the snow in that game was really well done. would like for there to be a reboot or a follow up.

Resistance was fun … for the most part, second game was big change to first game both entertaining. Third one was very disappointing for the very obviously rushed ending ! All games unfortunately fell into the modern trend of making games so easy you are wasting your time by not playing on hardest mode.
