Is Scarlett Johansson Hollywood’s Elena Fisher?

More importantly, is she your Elena Fisher because let’s face it, the Uncharted film is becoming less and less like the game with every casting call and plot overview that emerges. So Scarlett Johansson as Elena Fisher; it’s the latest casting possibility for the upcoming Uncharted film by David O Russell.

In an interview with Empire Online, Russell briefly discusses the role of Drake’s love interest Elena Fisher. The interview is primarily about his Oscar nominations for his new film The Fighter (which has been nominated for seven Oscars) but his Uncharted film adaptation is a hot topic at the moment so it obviously comes up as well.

What’s even more interesting is that it sounds like Robert De Niro and Mark Wahlberg aren’t entirely confirmed for the Uncharted film, which is contrary to earlier casting confirmations from a few months back. According to Russell:

“ I’m really excited to make [Uncharted]. I’d love Mark to be in it, I’d love Bob De Niro to be in it; I love the idea of growing them into a cinematic family; I think that’s a really cool idea, but… I guess you’ll have to wait until you see the script.”

Is this a silver lining? It’s unlikely and possibly just Russell being cautious before committing 100% to certain actors. But when asked about Elena, Russell said, “Ah, Elena. I’ve cultivated her quite a bit and I think I’ve added a lot of dimension to her so that’s all I’m going to say. I love the woman characters and the more robust they are, the more robust the movie.”

Further prompting revealed his interest in Johansson picking up the leading lady role for the film. Interestingly though, Amy Adams was also suggested, but that’s likely because she has just been in The Fighter alongside Christian Bale so has recently worked with director Russell.

So would Scarlett Johansson be enough to save the Uncharted film for geeks all over the world? Probably not. I’d pick a plot more faithful to the games and Nathan Fillion as Drake over Scarlett Johansson as a consolation prize any day.
