Is Skyrim headed to the PS4 and Xbox One?

fus roh PS4

One of my favourite games of the last couple of years, that I may have spent too many damn hours inside of, has to be The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. It was massive, awesome and beautiful. And now it looks like it may be headed towards new-gen consoles.

According to OnlySP, an email sent out from Bethesda has leaked that the game will be announced on January 12, a fact which has been bolstered by the game now being listed for those platforms as well. That listing is still on the North American Bethesda website for the game. Here’s some imagery to help legit the rumour:

bethesdabethesda

Does it sound like an odd idea to bring a now over two years old game back for an HD treatment? Not at all, judging by how many HD collections of much older games are sitting on store shelves for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 right now. And that’s without even mentioning the updated version of Tomb Raider that’s on the way.

I’d happily play a new version of Skyrim though. If it looks anything like the phenomenal work that PC modders have put in, includes all that DLC that was released and for the love of Mike Wazowski eliminates all those loading screens then I’d be so damn happy.

If you haven’t played it yet and just can’t wait until Monday for that imminent announcement, you can probably pick the game up on the cheap right now. It’s one of our very few games reviewed that got a perfect 10/10 score, and it deserved each and every one of those points.

Plus Cape-Tonians, let me sweeten the deal for you. Still sealed retail versions of the game include a map…made out of hemp. I’m not suggesting anything, but I’m certain you can find some use for it…dudes.

[Update]

Bethesda insists it was all just a website error.

  1. I’m not surprised they’re supposedly releasing it for the Xbone and PS4. If they can ramp up the graphics and throw it out there, the Elder Scrolls maniacs will get it, and they’ll get their friends to get it… and then…

This is awesome news, I loved Skyrim long time.
As long as it comes with ALL DLC and some extras like improved AI and perhaps some bonus content and an exclusive new add on.
Will be cool to have some things you havent seen before, dont just be a lazy HD remake to cash in on an aging title.

But seeing as the new gen consoles use the same architecture as PC’s, would it be possible for them to now introduce mods to consoles as well? Or am I confused again?

    but

……The combat is horrible….seriously boring and mundane and just feels off. Like you’re just flailing your arms around. Great game though *Don’t hate me*

It being the fifth in the series it went from “fine-crafted open-ended world role-playing adventure” to “action RPG in the snow”. 😛

I think I have a soft spot for Skyrim, since during the time I jammed the 300 odd hours into it, I was in a rough space in my life, so my escape to Skyrim was just so much more magical!

To be honest I lost interest in Skyrim after a week.

After playing Daggerfall, Morrowind and then Oblivion, Skyrim was a facelift in a bigger world, but there were so few options for improving your abilities and spells etc. Like you said, the combat was awkward and it winning so many awards left me feeling a bit puzzled.

It looked great, but was a step backwards in the Elder Scrolls sense.

I gotta admit the limits of spellcrafting and variety was a bit off putting.

I miss the Morrowind approach of “Do anything with magic you please”.

Still a great game though. But definitely suffers the “Let’s make easier for the masses” syndrome

I agree 100%. I hoped for so much better. Skyrim did practically nothing to improve combat from what it was like in Oblivion. After getting to the higher levels combat was more of a chore than something fun, even dragon fights were just to easy.

And yet I still like the game. Very frustrating.

This is true, I played it on PS3 and I would actually avoid going into a door if I could, I would wait until I absolutely HAD to go to that shop etc.
And when I did, I would go into zone out mode until the loading was over, it really was a joke.
And then there was Belethors shop in Whiterun, for some reason on my game you have a 50/50 chance of the game freezing when opening that specific door, so you would have to save before going in and pray you didnt have to restart the console cos then you were in for a whole lotta loading. ugh

Actually, I expected that with our PS4’s we would experience a significant lack of loading times, if not none, but was a bit disappointed that we still have them. Battlefield 4 has pretty long load times, AC4 not that much, maybe 5 to 10 seconds.

I installed mods that actually should have came with the game.

Better inventory system, better quality water, HD faces, Darker nights (you have to use a lightspell or a torch to see in caves), got a mod that makes the sky look better, got a mod that showed the roads on the map. got a mod that show generated random events (really cool)

I didnt bother changing the actual gameplay with mods.

didnt like the revised inventory system, tried the darker nights with overhauled lighting, but changed the darkness values back to match the vanilla game, hated not being able to see the Draugr in the dungeons without using magelight.
showing the roads on the map was such a simple improvement, dunno how i ever figured out a route to anywhere befor.

I ran into a bug on my first play through… couldn’t get through a damn door to complete a quest… had to find a work around as it wasn’t patched at the time.

That’s pretty irritating. I’ve been very lucky with Skyrim and bugs.

I’m still praying for Bioware to release the ME Trilogy on PS4…. That would make me very happy!

In all honesty? I’m sold already! 🙂 If, of course, it contains the DLC. I adored Skyrim and, to this day, go back to it every now and then to finish some side quests I didn’t get round to. Or to simply just wonder the landscape, taking in the sheer awesomeness. Almost 200 hours later and I’m still very much in love with that game (bugs and all!).

So to be able to play it on my new-gen console…? Hell yeah! Fus-Ro… **wait for it**… DAH!

i’ll buy the damn thing and pay more for it if they put it on the ps4 and reduce the god awful load times. i’m 2 trophies away from platinum and i quit because of the load times. i’m no expert at computers but my save file was 16mb and i had 350 hours into the game. i noticed the save file got a little bigger as you kept playing the game. i guess that is why it’s so slow now. hell i could play another game while waiting on the loadups. i was wondering if i could do something to reduce the load times. btw my sword damage is 868 million with no enchanments. i got 2billion with rings on, but then after that it went negative. restoration loop of course, but skyrim was my favorite game of all time…after deadspace1 and 2. put the mfer of ps4 with the option to bring in saved files.
