Yes it’s an inflammatory headline but if one of our recent commenter’s is to be believed this is exactly what Sony is doing.
According to Mondracon his PS3 was starting to have issues with freezing so he called up his friendly American tech support and was told to upgrade to Firmware 3.01.
He did and that changed the issue, now his PS3 won’t ever read a Blu-Ray disc. he called tech support again they had this to say
“Your system would have failed eventually. We just prescribed a set of procedures to follow that would diagnose the problem. It just made the end result occur more rapidly.â€
And now Mondracon has to part with $150 to get the thing fixed…
The thing that makes me think this is real is that the article he left the comment on was an old one about a possible class action suit against Sony for failing Blu-ray drives, the guy/girl obviously feels aggrieved and is looking for some way to get back at Sony for what he feels is a dodgy business practice.
If Sony knew that firmware 3.01 may brick his console surely that means that Sony are responsible for fixing it even though it is out of it’s warranty period? But then again how would you ever prove that?

There is no reason for Sony to break your ps3 , we are talking about a reputable corporation here , not some backyard operation.

Please don’t be like the BBC and come in with unfounded facts. they did this with their ylod feature and completely made fools of themselves. In a nutshell they pretty much came off being anti-sony which resulted in a potentially serious matter not being reported properly. The fact is all these hearsy baseless facts are bad for consumers who may suffer real injustices.

I you would like to call me a fan of their products so be it , my ps2 has been going for 9 years without any issues and my 60 gig ps 3 for more than 2 years with no problems ,and their software and online services aren’t too bad either .

There’s actually a lot of local users who have YLOD and BRD failure issues. Just have a browse on the PS3za forums.
I don’t think that any company would intentionally brick a consumer’s console.
I would like an extended warranty for my PS3 though.

yeah i agree, my brother’s ps3 died a week or so after the warranty expired. I would also like an extended warranty. I get slightly pissed off when what appears to be real problems get such stupid headlines and don’t get me started on that stupid BBC program. Even people who suffered hardware failures was dissapointed in the unproffesional way they handled the issue.

I really can not see a company like Sony breaking PS3 consoles intentionally, although if their firmware is causing issues never previously encountered then they should be looking to fix the PS3 for free. I am not sure how widespread this issue is but if people speak up about it at least there is a chance something will be done.

3.01 killed my ps3 sony says my unit is old… they wont fix it for everything worked fine until i downloaded the ps3 killer firmware now i can’t watch dvds/blu-ray/ or play games wtf sony!
