It took players two months (and a couple of hints) to find a hidden Division 2 boss

The Agony is a secret boss players can trigger in the popular looter-shooter, themed around the destruction of bee hives in the Manning National Zoo

When The Division 2 launched earlier this year (Yeah, that was this year. Wild.) I think everyone sort of took it at face value. Players got what was on the menu and never complained because the offerings were actually pretty good. There was a solid gameplay loop and enough content to keep everyone amused for hours on end; so amused, in fact, that players have been overlooking a secret boss that’s existing within the game for over two months now. During a State of the Game livestream last night, developer Trick Dempsey gave away some clues that there might be more than meets the eye in Manning National Zoo, giving away a few choice hints regarding a secret event.

During the State of the Game stream, Dempsey was revealing all the new content coming to the Manning National Zoo area, a location that was part of the DC Outskirts: Expeditions DLC that launched back in July, when he noted that one of the bosses included in that content update had yet to be discovered. “I felt really strange that we’re doing, ‘Hey, here’s a bunch of new bosses here inside of Manning National Zoo,’ when people haven’t even found all of the bosses in Manning National Zoo”, said Dempsey.

To accommodate for this, Dempsey and the stream’s co-host Hamish Bode gave away some key hints for players to pick up on, saying that there was no interactable prompt that would reveal the boss and that players could trigger something if they “do some things” in an area that’s “a football field’s length in which you are doing nothing”. Which might seem incredibly vague to you and me, but two hours after the stream ended, redditor ArcLight079 discovered what all the hints were pointing towards. Players have to shoot 5 beehive displays: Near the ocelot exhibit, the upper levels of the wolf exhibit, between the monorail and crocodile exhibit, a maintenance area located directly behind the monorail rain and then lastly near the butterfly display exhibit. Once all these hives have been desecrated with bullets, a prompt will occur outside the butterfly display and The Hive will make himself known.

While I can’t say for sure whether or not there’s a specific sequence to the hives or if they can be destroyed in any order, what I am fairly certain about is The Agony being a reference to The Pain, a boss from Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. A member of super-powered Cobra Unit, The Pain is a fairly early boss Snake will encounter in the game and has the ability to control a swarm of insects, although the yellow and black colouring of his outfit led me to think they were definitely bees. The Agony doesn’t seem to drop any remarkable loot, but it’s nice to know that The Division is the sort of game to hide these kinds of fun easter eggs away for players. Makes you wonder about what else players have yet to discover…

I love it when developers pay homage to other games that they weren’t involved in, especially games that have cult followings or are known as classic titles!
