Did you hear that? That was the sound of 3 million Koreans simultaneously breaking out in tears. The reason for their melancholy, you see, is that Activision-Blizzard have confirmed that Starcraft II : Sons Wings of Liberty will not be getting a 2009 publication, instead being pegged with an indefinite “first half of 2010” release.

Of course Blizzard have never actually announced a specific release date, but many pundits had their hopes on one within this quarter. The reason it won’t hit retail in 2009?

The very same upgraded battle.net system that’s the root of chagrin behind Starcraft II’s missing LAN. According to the developers “Over the past couple of weeks, it has become clear that it will take longer than expected to prepare the new Battle.net for the launch of the game.” According to Activision-Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick, the new Battle.net – the integral multiplayer component which is purported to be similar to Xbox Live – will be ready “early next year.”

Disappointing? Sure, but hardly unexpected. Those following the game closely would know that Blizzard intend to implement a four-to-six month public multiplayer beta before release. If you were to check your calendars, you might be surprised to discover that there are only four months left in the year.
