Just about every AAA game coming out for the foreseeable future is a sequel or reboot of something we’ve played before. You can moan all you like about how publishers and developers are creatively bankrupt, only trying to make a quick buck – but the truth of it is that it’s all your fault. Well, not yours specifically, so stop sitting there looking all guilty.
According to Nielsen – the same Media research group that tells you how many people watch the Bold and the Beautiful every day – the most anticipated games are nearly all sequels. They polled 4,800 over the month of June, between the ages of 7 and 54 years old for their most anticipated games on the current consoles and these are the results.
“The anticipation level among gaming consumers was derived from leveraging several key consumer metrics, including Awareness and Purchase Interest, into one overall score. That score was then compared to scores from all previous games released on the same platform at the same point in their release cycles, to determine the percentile ranking of the upcoming title (aka the Nielsen Game Rank™).”

The only new IP that shows up anywhere on the lists are both Wii titles; The Last Story and…ugh…Everyone Sing. I’m really surprised that The Last of Us (a game Erwin Kempff won’t be able to play) for the PlayStation 3 doesn’t show up – but maybe it’s just too new, without much of a mainstream media marketing blitz to matter right now. It’s not like we’re not all guilty of it either; here in the LG office we’re all waiting anxiously for a sequel – Borderlands 2.
