Jak II in the CryEngine looks breathtaking

Could a modern Jak look like this?

Before Naughty Dog made their undeniable mark on the PS3 with Uncharted and The Last of Us, their games were different. One particular franchise was a must have on the PS2, and I’m all for the return of Jak and Daxter now that the PS4 is out. Naughty Dog might not be actively working on a sequel, but what would it look like if they were?

Naughty Dog might not be dreaming about a Jak II remake, but Deviant artist Floordan is. His personal Jak II Renegade: Reborn project is currently being built in the CryEngine, giving fans like you and me a good look at what a new entry into the series could look like. Take a look at the phenomenal remake of the Pumping Station below:

It’s a big difference from the PS3 classic, but it’s also immediately recognizable. From the spinning wind turbines to the breakable red and white boxes that housed ammo and health, it screams Jak II through and through. The modernization loses some of the cartoonish charm the game had, but I don’t think any fan would lift their nose up at a sequel that looks that good.

Unlike Crash Bandicoot, the Jak franchise has a lot of room for modernization. The mechanics are open for tweaking, and having played Jak II again recently I can honestly say it wouldn’t take much for Naughty Dog to make the franchise feel right at home on the PS4. I would take that anyway over a Last of Us sequel.

  1. Sounds like they should offer Floordan a job as head of their Jak Remastered division (newly formed).

If this was a kickstarter, I would back the sh## out of it…
I replayed all 3 Jak games when they came for Plus last year… I’ll happily play them again!

Honestly never played a Jak title… Since it’s made by Naughty Dog (whom I love), I definitely feel like I missed out.
