John Riccitiello thinks game pricing should be tiered

Videogames can cost a heck of a lot of money. If you’re part of the crowd that must have things on day one, gaming is a seriously expensive hobby. Former EA boss John Riccitiello believes games would do better if they took a cue from mobile games and adopted a variable pricing model. In fact, he thinks that the $60 standard pricing for most games is “a giant F-U to a very large number of people.”

“There’s not been a console game with even half as many installs as Clash of Clans,” he said at Gaming Insider Summit.  “Puzzle & Dragons has got more installs than any console game in history. Getting a larger audience through variable pricing is a really useful thing.”

He believes that games should function more as a service than a product – which is how many mobile titles function.

“More than anything, what the traditional game industry should learn from mobile is it’s really about service,” he said. “It’s an ongoing business. You’d think we would have learned this some time ago, but I find it interesting that WoW and Sim City and GTA and Starcraft and many other games all fell over at launch when they put their service components together.

“Some of the biggest brands – I’d argue almost all the biggest brands – fell over from lack of the testing and research that mobile people do in the regular course of their day.”

I do agree with him that the current pricing model for retail games is silly; something like Call of Duty Ghosts or Assassin’s Creed IV, both of which will give gamers hours of play, shouldn’t cost the same as Deadpool, which could be completed in five hours. I’m not, of course, suggesting that games should be priced as a direct ratio to the amount of playtime you’ll get – just that there should be a clearer divide between Triple A, and things that just aren’t.

It’s something we’ve discussed before, and I’d honestly be far more keen to pick up a game that’s gotten decent, but not great reviews if it was R350 instead of R600 – and I think I’m not alone. Of course, the free-to-play movement is trying to address this, by offering good, and even great games that could potentially cost you absolutely nothing, but the pay-to-win ethos often overshadows those games inherent positives.

Look, we can all agree that Aliens: Colonial Marines was a bag of bull. Borderlands not so much. So if a studio releases one dud, that is not so bad. But look at Peter Molyneux for example. Every game after Black and White was promised to be the second coming. But everything that guy did was boring and fell flat. Do I want Peter to make anymore games? Nope.
Time for him to step aside and let the next Mass Effect come through if you follow what I am saying.

Which B&W2 did you play? I finished that in a day and was bored the whole way through. It ruined everything that the original was. He made an rts with some giant useless turd creature thing. And it was bland and boring.

          • TiMsTeR1033

            October 23, 2013 at 09:53

Dude, original was way worse, worse graphics worse physics. BW2 Has better buildings miracles ect.

            October 23, 2013 at 09:59

Yeah but the time you spent on your creature (which was the big unique new thing) really showed. You had to really teach that thing, spend time with it, and getting new skins / creatures wasn’t the easiest thing. Some skins were hard work.

They removed everything B&W had going for it with #2 and made it a generic rts with some lumbering idiot creature thing. And yes, generic. RA1 was better. WC1 as well.

          • TiMsTeR1033

            October 23, 2013 at 10:01

          • ToshZA

            October 23, 2013 at 10:17

Than the latest ones yeah, but thing C&C4 and B&W2 – they’re on a par with crappiness.

What I was referring to however is that both RA1 & WC1 are better than B&W2 – and they fall into the same genre. B&W1 was its own genre really, a blend of populous and a tamagotchi.

The thing is – Skyrim IS my game preference. I loved it. But its old and boring and did I mentioned I get bored fast. For a game to keep me busy for a month without playing any other game is a big deal.

If I picked it up now, I’d play 15 hours, and then again in 6 months. I’d have hated to waste R1k on it.

          • TiMsTeR1033

            October 23, 2013 at 09:52

Why you get bored so fast? what was a a great game besides skyrim from you?

          • ToshZA

            October 23, 2013 at 09:56

Honestly Skyrim was awesome. I mean awesome. The previous non-mmo (grind fests, its a false time sink) game that kept me busy for at least a month was Baldurs Gate 2 when it was released. Not even Oblivion or Morrowind did that for me.

For example: The Witcher 2 – LOVE the game. Played it once, tried a second play through, and I couldn’t even finish the first act. It was just more of the same. Total playtime around 25 – 30 hours. Not bad, but still, not skyrim.

And also: addictive games such as pokemon which i’ve sunk more time into than I’d like to admit, don’t count. The formula is to grind away to catch them all. It’s not pure content driven game play. If you understand?

Ps, sorry for the wall of text.

I dunno man, for me personally a game lasts a long time.. I don’t like to rush games plus don’t have the time as Id like to have. Back in college days game would keep me happy for a month or so… Now about 3 months maybe more..
If you have alot of free time I see the issue at hand.

            October 23, 2013 at 10:16

Technically I don’t have all that much free time – but I have insomnia so I’m up til 1am whether I lie in bed or play games. May as well do the latter.

Idk, I just get through content fast though.

Skyrim: Let me tell you, I got it for R600.00 when it released, and a few weeks back I got myself the Ultimate edition on PC: Base plus all three expansions for R300.00.

This old chestnut always resurfaces. The conclusion is never ever resolved as it gets compared to the movie model.

The old EA CEO must go to Zinga. He was fired for a reason. Bringing the Service model to the forefront was the demise of Sim Shitty.

Yes, they decide the price. I decide if it’s worth it. It’s the balance between price & value. I get annoyed when I hear them talking about value to justify price. Deciding if the price is equal or lower than the value I assign to something is my decision. I doubt very much that they’re impartial in that regard.

I agree with a tiered structure. Often games are just not worth the price they ask.

However, I do think that games in general need to have their prices dropped across the board. More sales at a smaller price is always better than less sales at higher price

    I buy Skyrim for R80.00.

I get summoned by the Greybeards to High Rothgar.
They tell me that ‘Ro’ is the next best thing since ‘Fus’, hence I get it for free.
But then they show me that what I really need in my Dragonborn existence is ‘Dah’
So I can get ‘Dah’ for extra R150.00.

The game should be priced around the budget.

265million to make GTAV for $60
    or
    3million to make Cars 2 for $60?

I don’t know. Stalker COP, for example, had a small budget compared to other games and I would much rather get it than some of the other big budget games. EA has hurt me way too much to let me think big budgets mean that the games are worth their prices. (but that’s just my opinion)

The mods on COP have made that game so much more fun. When I hear that siren going off, warning you of a storm and I’m in the middle of nowhere I just about crap myself. Wish it had co-op.

I don’t know, part of what appeals to me about the series is the isolation. It wouldn’t be the same going underground with someone having your back, because those locations really gave the old starfish a workout.

            October 23, 2013 at 10:21

That’s true. You have a point. I scare easily, so that’s probably mostly my reason for wanting co-op.

That game sure knows how to get you shitting some grade-A bricks. Glad to see there’s someone who enjoyed that series as much as I have.

I’ll never forget going into the first underground bunker. I think you had to find a keycard. You get that flashing light that squeaks as it goes round, a faint humming sound builds, stuff starts lifting off the ground & suddenly boxes are flying at your head. Mommy!

I hate those things. The worst is when you’re in the opening marshlands level in Clear Sky, it’s pitch black at night & you’re in the tall reeds, then you hear one of those things. And they’re never alone.

A game is NOT A FUCKING SERVICE. It is a PRODUCT. It’s not bloody different from any other THING you BUY. This service bullshit is ruining my fucking hobby. It’s not beneficial to customers, the only thing that benefits is the publisher because legal semantics allow it to screw paying customers out of a PRODUCT for which they paid FULL FUCKING PRICE. “Oh we’re switching off this server now, sorry, if you want to keep playing this type of game you have to buy our new one.” FUCK OFF. It’s a bunch of bullshit & stupid people lap it up.

The thing is Trevor, frankly they just dont give a shit about us as the customers. See us as money and see only money.. Which is why they wont keep servers going for longer as it costs them money they want to use for a new car or something lol.

I know that. It’s just one of many reasons why I’ve stopped buying so many games. I’m not a goddamn walking wallet for them to rifle through whenever they release some piece of dreck. It’s just getting worse & worse.

I have zero problem with a business making money. That’s the whole point of a business. But publishers like EA screwing over customers to make an extra $1mil, which they wouldn’t notice the loss of anyway & probably wasted on some fancy fucking water feature for their offices or in some other creative way pisses me off.

Which is why I wait until customer reviews and some time have passed before buying a game. It spared me games such as AC3 and RA3 and the like. Also, I get to play the good ones for less. I win, and the devs that make good games get paid. So, a win-win and everyone’s happy.

Also, I don’t buy DLC unless its in some steam special thing where the game comes with DLC. Otherwise, just no.

Me too. I’ll rather wait, see the reviews, then wait some more to get the whole game including DLC on special.

The only exception to that will be Witcher 3. I loved the previous two, and CDPR doesn’t screw you – so they’ve earned my trust.

            October 23, 2013 at 10:38

I will have to wait for the witcher 3 until I get a better graphics card, or a next gen console. I’d probably get more value out of the console, but I spend more time on the pc. choices.

Still, either way, this is a must have purchase. I agree.

I went off topic a bit didn’t I? Ah. Whatever.

Most ‘OK but not great’ games end up being bought months or years down the line in a bargain bin or some special or bundle anyways instead of rather showing strong launch numbers at a lower price point, so this would make a ton of sense to me. Take for example… umm… Darksiders 2 which I bought on sale. Kinda like first one, sequel got OK reviews but not like “MUST HAVE NOW”, so I didn’t really even look at it next to a big line-up of other titles. If it was like R300 at launch, I would have been WAY more likely to go get it.

Also works for launch windows. Your game competing with something huge like CoD or GTA? Make it cheap. A lot of people might say, OK I’m gonna budget a total of like R1000 or $90 or something for games, go pick up a full price title and a cheaper one to make up a nice gaming schedule for the month/holidays etc.
