JRPGs will be coming to Xbox One

Xbox One Japan

I’m a massive fan of RPGs, and I have a special fondness for JRPGs. Most of those kinds of games seem to come to PlayStation rather than Xbox, although there have been some notable exceptions, and Phil Spencer is promising that Xbox One will be getting in on the JRPG action.

JRPGs are a bit thin on the ground at the moment, although we’ve been promised a whole bunch in the coming years. Of course, people are asking if it will lean towards the PlayStation, but never fear, the Xbox One won’t be neglected. Over on twitter, the question was put to Phil Spencer:

Xbox One has been struggling in Japan, which was sort of expected but still came as a bit of a shock to Microsoft. There haven’t been any notable JRPG exclusives to Xbox since the time of Lost Odyssey, which is already so dated that I struggled to play it last year. It would be great to see a return to the genre for Xbox, although I still believe that PlayStation is associated with RPGs and JRPGs in general while Xbox is more of a shooter brand. That could totally be my own prejudice, but that’s how I personally divide the consoles -and this idea seems to be continuing into the new generation.

Do you think the consoles lean towards specific genres, or are they all the same to you? Would you like to see more exclusives on the various platforms, or do they make you cry because you can’t have all the things?

Honestly, I don’t see any difference between the consoles for any genre besides JRPG’s in particular. Otherwise – it’s always been pretty much whichever one floats your boat. That and SOME exclusives.

I’m a huge RPG fan, and I had plenty to play on my Xbox 360.

Yeah, DragonAge is awesome, bar a few tiny glitches. I also have CoD:AW, and it looks awesome. Then FC4 is a must play as well! FFS, too many good games at once.

“You will see JPRGs on XBOX One” wow, that’s as close to an autoreply as I’ve ever seen. I would like to see any games really. Too many remastered games and too many sequels this year. Also there were lots of games that was postponed for 2015 but that’s for the best I guess after all the broken games this year.

360 surprisingly had its fair share of JRPGs, I just hope they’re not exclusive otherwise I have to buy a One 🙁 I can foresee an exclusive though, maybe LO 2? I would love that, if LO just had better pacing it would be a top tier RPG let alone a JRPG

The reason i got my 360 was the JRPG’s, when PS3 was sitting with virtually none the 360 has Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, Eternal Sonata and it also got Star Ocean 4 first which was enough to kill me as I adore the series.

So yeah I can see JRPG’s coming to the system, i mean shit didnt FF15 back pedal on the ps4 exclusivity? And Kingdom hearts 3?

Biggest problem is I don’t see JRPG’s (well ones that get localized quickly anyway) making a difference to which one people want. JRPG’s over the course of the last generation have taken a major knock. We had a few really good ones on ps3 and xb1 like Lost Odyssy was amazing. White Knight Chronicles had a lot of promise but apart from the fun as hell multiplayer and combo system never lived up to the hype.

Wii had the best offerings with Xenoblade and the last story.

But JRPG’s overall just are not the games they used to be, I do not really think fondly of any of the last generations JRPGS with exception of Valkyria Chronicles (dunno if this counts) and Xenoblade chronicles.

The Final Fantasy offerings in the form of 13 were mediocre. With the soul exception of Tales of Graces F the tales series of the last generation was also mediocre. Some gems shone through like the Atelier series and Ar Tonelico Qqoga was pretty fun.

Dont even mention Ni No Kuni to me, solid game but 40 fucking hours of Neato! is enough to ruin everything (Ghibli I love you, but your characters are stories are not meant for more than two hours =p)

But yea, the big name JRPG’s to be need to find their footing first before it even matters what console they are on.

The problem I have with JRPGs this generation are the stories. What happened to the days of Shadow Hearts and Xenosaga. Everything is falling into that generic anime trope and I hate it because the games are still bloody fun. Star Ocen The Last Hope was an amazing, if all the characters were muted. Same goes for Infinite Undiscovery and Eternal Sonata. Best JRPG I played last gen was Nier. The story was amazing and that is what I wanted to see from JRPGs, its what I know the genre is capable of. Unique and gripping stories mixed with awesome gameplay…. I love JRPGS but ooh booooi am I sick of these kak generic by the numbers jrpgs…
      ..
      ..
Here’s looking to next gen. That said, most of the great JRPGS are all on handhelds.

          ^^

Problem is the Japanese audio track and subs did not come in until the PS4 release. On the 360 you only got english.

And that is exactly why you buy the console with blue ray.

Lol Yeah, but don’t forget it launched in 2009 with no confirmation of a PS3 edition ever being announced. As I said in my original post as well there was a sever lack of Jrpgs on either system.

As someone who is nuts over the franchise, i sure as well was not going to wait on ps3 edition. Like a lot of people lol.

But yes I picked up the international edition and it was far more enjoyable in japanese though the bulk of that cast still deserve to be silenced.
