The Wii came with a whopping 512MB of on-board storage for saves and digital game downloads, which makes it quite nice that Nintendo’s increased the internal storage on its soon-to-be-released Wii U. The Deluxe model packs 32GB, but the basic, cheaper model has just 8 gigglebytes. Only less than half of it is available to users.

It’s rather usual for platform holders to set aside a bit of the storage for things like firmware updates and the operating system; Xbox Pro owners found that they had just 13GB of storage available to them on their 20GB drives.

The Wii U though hoards 4.2Gb for firmware updates and profile data; a ludicrous amount giving basic system owners less than half of the advertised storage space. Nintendo of Japan has confirmed (via Kotaku ) that 8GB WIi U users have 3GB of useable storage, while those who opt for the more expensive  32GB Deluxe model will have  25GB.

It’s probably worth noting that the Wii U’s proprietary discs hold just 25GB of data; which means you’d be able to hold precisely one downloadable retail game that uses the entirety of the disc. Of course, it’s also a good time to point out that you’ll be able to hook up any USB storage, of any size, and use that to bolster the system’s storage.

The Wii U’s out this Sunday in the US, and November 30th in Europe. It will be MINE!
