Just Cause 3 skipping multiplayer madness at launch

The official announcement for Just Cause 3 had me beyond tickled pink. This is a franchise that bathes in the insane – riding on jets, turning parachuting into flying and a grappling hook from the gods are all on the table. I’m almost certain that’s all going to be back for the third entry, but a fan favourite mode won’t be making its way to the sequel just yet.

Just Cause 2 launched without multiplayer, but that didn’t stop a dedicated group of fans from creating one. A mod so damned polished and fun that even Avalanche Studios took notice, prompting them to confirm the feature for their own sequel. Problem is, it won’t be available at launch, as Avalanche says it’s not their area of expertise.

Avalanche CCO and co-founder Christofer Sundberg explained that they’re not looking for fans to create multiplayer again, but does ask for some patience.

“We don’t expect the fans to make the multiplayer for Just Cause 3, but at some point you have to make a choice on where your focus is. Our strength is the sandbox experience, and we want to deliver a great Just Cause 3 experience.”

Turns out, Avalanche might not even be developing the multiplayer at all down the line. Square Enix cloud-aging company, Shinra Technologies, has been linked with Just Cause 3, especially after their Senior Vice President has this rather specific example to offer.

“What we see in the near future are cloud games that are developed from the ground up as well as games that are in an existing pipeline that we will enhance. For example, taking a game that doesn’t have multiplayer right now and easily giving it multiplayer is what we imagine for enhancements.”

Following on from that, Vice President Jacob Navok said that working on Just Cause 3 “would make a lot of sense”, so I think it’s safe to assume that they’re in bed with Avalanche to make that happen.

How long down the line we’ll have to wait is another mystery on its own, but I’m glad that Avalanche has taken the hints from fans and actually included multiplayer this time. Just Cause 3 was just announced, so I wouldn’t expect it anytime soon. Who else can’t wait to break every law of physics again and again?

No Multiplayer, initially, in a made for SP game? Imagine that…

And I’m quite happy for it to stay the hell away, to be honest! Far too many ‘let’s get it online’ modes at the moment… Bring back the good ol’ SP experience!
