Console Sales Figures

The Xbox 360 has been ahead of the PS3 since launch as it had that extra years head start on it, however the PS3 has been selling exceptionally well in the last couple of months and I thought it was about time we took a look at the unofficial stats to see just how much closer the PS3 has gotten to regaining 2nd place.

Let’s first get the Wii out of the way, it’s dominating in every region  and has a lead of 2.1 Million over the Xbox 360 and PS3 combined.

So back to the HD war between the PS3 and Xbox 360. In January last year the Xbox 360’s lead was around 8 million if I recall and it was leading in all regions bar Japan.

Fast forward to now and the PS3 is still leading in Japan by 3.3 million but has surprisingly failed to overtake the 360 in Europe yet.

The 360 still has a slim lead in Europe of 350k while still dominating in America with a lead of 9.1 million.

Some quick maths and we can see that the Xbox is still leading in the HD war by 5.9 million which if my memory is correct means that the PS3 caught up around 2 million units in 2009.

At that rate the PS3 will continue to be in last place for another 3 years bringing us into the 2014 year neck and neck.

However with the Arc and Project Natal both being released this year expect a huge shake up in the market with Project Natal possibly having the advantage over the Arc with it’s cooler mainstream technology.

The PlayStation Arc may be the more technically useful product but in the end it’s just another peripheral.

i give it till April or at the latest December 2010. There isn’t enough exclusives in the 360’s arsenal this year to keep the gap as wide as it is. a lot of people i know rather play PS3 then their 4th Xbox. Me myself included

If Halo Reach is good, then watch that XBox 360 gap open wider. And don’t forget Splinter: Cell Conviction next month.

Mass Effect 2 is already out and I was reading a thread where a PC gamer said that he rather buy a XBox360 Elite instead of a top-end PC graphics card to play Mass Effect 2 in HD and on a 42″ screen.

i dont know about those european numbers for xbox a little fishy. Also the 360 has great titles comming this year jsut too bad they arent system sellers. meaning people who already have a xbox will play them.this year i believe ps3 will sell5 5 million more than xbox. when ever you dont round numbers to the nearent place your numbers are off. becuase the system sells still. i dont see the purpose in being line they are 350k ahead or 5.9 million that equals to a little over a qautter million and 6 million. only the company knows the real numbers anyway

Halo: Reach will not sell consoles. Halo fans already bought an Xbox 360 to play Halo 3. Splinter Cell might be a system seller, however rumours are rampant that it’s a timed – exclusive only and it’ll be on PS3 (Along with Mass Effect) by the end of the year.

:alien: What thread was that?? Someone needs to give that anonymous PC gamer some much needed guidance… A “top-end” PC graphics card is not required to play Mass Effect 2 at full-tilt… I have it running on a 2.5 year old HD3870 with all options enabled (using a DVI/HDMI out to a 47″ TV)…

*laughing* wow! what is this? Fanboy central? I got downvoted for speaking empirically verifiable facts? I AM running Mass Effect 2 on a 2.5 year old video card… ALL MULTI-PLATFORM GAMES THIS GEN (with the exception of maybe Far Cry 2 and GTA IV) can be played at full blast on a 3-4 year old dual-core CPU with a 2-3 year old video card (just look at the recommended system requirements)! Hell, I used my -almost 4 year old- x1950 PRO for just about everything until Prototype! If this anonymous, forum-posting PC gamer really thinks an xbox elite, plus controllers, plus Live fees, etc. is a better value than a graphics card upgrade for HD gaming, he’s off his rocker.

Not at all knockin’ 360: If you don’t already HAVE a gaming capable rig, then, yes, go get a 360… but if you already have a decently clocked dual+ core CPU and a free PCIe slot, you’d be crazy to buy a full console for a non-exclusive game, just sayin’…

LOL, better re – check those facts of yours, kid. No 360 exclusive has sold even half of what the Gran Turismo games have. GT 3 sold 15 million, which is more than both Gears games put together, in fact, it’s more than the entire Forza franchise.

1 Playstation exclusive sells to an equivalent of every game on the 360 combined.

how do you explain Halo 3s going on 11 million copies then? 11 million out of 35 million bought Halo 3, yet GT3 only managed 15 million out of over 150 million people that had a PS2. seems to me that Halo 3 put GT to shame.

What in the world are you talking about?

The 360 has one of its strongest years ahead of it. Mass Effect 2 is one of the biggest releases in a while and it is a great start to the year for the 360. I have actually never seen a stronger lineup this generation. This strong lineup along with Natal will be more than enough to keep the 360 selling very well, if not to outright increase its sales.

You are clearly a PS3 fan and that is fine, but I have both consoles and I think your view is quite skewed. Just looking at it logically I think the PS3 is going to find it quite hard to catch up.

I have both consoles too and I still think the PS3 line-up is better with MAG, Heavy Rain, White Knight Chronicles, God of War 3, The Last Guardian, Agent, GTAIV 50million DLC announced, Gran Turismo 5, DC universe online,

very varies compared to more shooter for the X360. Mass Effect 2 is just another shooter disguised as an rpg, like if the last 2 Halos from last year weren’t enough mow we have another this year. And sooner or later Splinter Cell will come to the PS3 as well as Mass Effect. Aster that announcement of GTAIV DLC coming for the PS3 too everything’s possible. Oh and Alan Wake will be delayed.

Lets Face it MS will never punch something as visually striking as Uncharted 2 or Heavy Rain. Unless they span it over 4-5 discs.

I’m tired of MS giving us gamers false promises of all these great things to come… HD DVD failed and so will “Natal” By the time GT 5 is released we’ll see all the old xbox “Fanboys” shooting back to the Sony platform wanting to play their old favorite “Real driving simulator”

No way in hell will I buy that “Project Natal” so they call it, and this Arc dildo from SONY. When I have a nintendo wii (which has been collecting dust, and will until the next Legend of Zelda comes out) to play with, and it’s not like I play wii sports every damn day. I am a socom guy, and with that having ‘some’ motion put into it, made the game shit. With the little tilt to the side bla. Motion control is OK for sometimes just messing around, but with main games like halo, legend of zelda, metal gear i really don’t feel like playing with no damn motion dildo and espally no standing up from a long day of work playing with the “PROJECT NATAL”.

GOW 3 will be a big system seller for Sony. It’s expected that Final Fantasy XIII will help boost PS3 sales in the west as well.

However Sony’s Ace card this year is Gran Turismo 5. A franchise that no Xbox exclusive has ever even come CLOSE to in terms of sales. That will be a bigger system seller than even MGS4.

Thats why game Designers have a program called DEV tools to compress most of the games without lossing TOO much qaulity of the game… If Graphics isnt what takes up the disc space my un educated friend why in God’s awesome name would Final Fantasy ship on 3 disc for the 360 and 1 on the PS3

          LOL!

Final Fantasy 13 is on 3 discs because its cutscenes are all HD FMV instead of using the in-game engine. the PS3 version has already been dissected, and 32.5 of the 39gb on the disc is FMV.

you could have PS1 graphics, but if you store it in 720p FMV with borders around the tiny PS1s resolution, it will still take up a HUGE amount of space for even 1 minute of cutscene. to put in in perspective, a few minutes of 720p HD FMV takes up more room than most PS1 games do.

ive got my facts straight mate, i actually know what im talking about. you obviously have no clue, and you just proved it to everyone.

microsoft will want to launch their new console before sony do, so they can again get off to a flying start ahead of sony, further eroding sonys hold on the industry.

vgchartz isn’t a source. Their numbers are inflated by a million or so on the 360. Not to mention Microsoft uses shipped figures instead of sold figures… so you can take out another 2 million.

Let’s not forget Microsoft has seen over 54% of their consoles fail, so there were a lot of replacement units, again using a shipped figure helps inflate their numbers, since these units were shipped but not sold.

Finally, Microsoft banned modded 360s, so a million or so users bought a new one.

With all that taken into consideration, Sony is not only well ahead, they are well ahead while releasing a year (a year and a half in Europe) after the deadlast 360.

I agree, the people that had banned consoles re-bought, people that had the RROD have bought more than one console, plus shipped figures is not sold figures, even so XBL is over 7 years old now and only has 23 million members, while PSN has over 38 million members. Now if MS say that over 90% of console owners are online, that means the MS has not sold 39 million 360 consoles does it.?

There are companies out there that specialize in doing this but they still can only give you an estimate since they only look at the major retailers.

look , lets talk facts –
1 :Xbox 360 had a full year head start.
2 :Ps3 was under stocked and over priced when it lauched.
3 : 2009 – only year when ps3 had a decent line up of games.
    4 : price cut + redesign + the best looking year for ps3 (2010) games that are exclusive! plus ps3 games getting 2008 , 2009 GOTY awards ( check game spot – 2008 – MGS4 – 2009 Demon souls , Ign 2009 UC 2)
5 : ps3 IS going to be around for 10years! , MS will release the next “crap box” 2012 where sony will release ps4 around 2014 – 2015 , and then MS will pull , ‘We are winning the race ” , well yeah if you had a 2 year start you will.
6: it is pretty plain and simple – Ps3 is superior to xbox 360 , both in terms of hardware , and now software and well life span and quality ( ha ha RRod )
us proud sony supporters ( since ps1 ) dont need figures to prove sony ps3 is better all we need are review scores ( compare ps3 exclusives to crapbox exclusives scores and see what i mean – check out some blogs at gamespot) and 2010 with all our great games and 1 more ps3 game getting GOTY.

Umm… yeah… which is why Konami’s new Castlevania game AND Square’s FFXIII both use PS3 as their lead platform and yet both dev houses demonstrated absolutely no quality/features were lost in the translation…

You people are so misinformed it isn’t even funny…

The games were done using different engines for each console mate, you cannot port a PS3 game onto the 360, which is why Devs do it from Old tech 360 to the new tech PS3. And is the reason why some ports look crap. Just look at Killzone 2, that shows the PS3 has better graphics, its the Devs fault theres crap ports./ :dizzy:

MS needs to release it ( SOLD figures ) like all the other consoles. If they did PS3 might be in 2nd place/ I have been saying this for ages. It doesn’t matter what people say, but Ship and Sold figures have differences. I would love too see MS real SOLD figures. :cheerful:

microsofts ‘consoles sold’ figures are as accurate as sonys. where are you getting this information that sony only count units sold from shops (even though they have no way of knowing when a shop sells a console) but microsoft do consoles shipped to shops? please, id love to know.

It’s no use Joe, I’ve asked the question several times but to no avail. It’s hard coded into their brains.

I’m not exactly sure how console SALES are calculated but I know Sony did mention that all their numbers are sales (so did Nintendo). Microsoft are the only ones that didnt say it – from what i understand. So it’s safe to assume they count there sales differently and that difference will lead to a higher number.

One way of trying to track sales would be to not include the latest shipment data. A shop will not order another shipment until they are running low on stock. Of course there will be error but the number will be closer to true sales.

To use an example. I havent sold any console. So my sales are 0. I send out 1 million. My sales are still 0. I then get demands for another 2 million consoles. I assume I have sold 1 million. Yes this is incredibly flawed – and i doubt its actually done like this. But hey i know bugger all when it comes to console sales.

I just think everybody misinterpreted what “sold” mean when nintendo and Sony mentioned it. I think they ment sold to RETAILER instead of sold to CUSTOMER.

@Slippy: Isn’t sold to retailer the same as shipped? I mean where you shipping them to besides retailers?

PS3 outselling Xbox 360 in 2009 fiscal year

Sony, Microsoft, released their fiscal reports for the closing months of 2009, and some of the numbers are very interesting. While Microsoft currently holds a 5 million unit lead over Sony in worldwide sales,( ONLY ) Microsoft is currently at 38.7 million units, while Sony has 33.5 million, things are looking up for Sony. Sales figures for fiscal year 2009 are much better for Sony than in previous years.

Since April 1st till December 31st, Sony has moved 10.8 million PS3 units. On the competitor’s side, Microsoft has moved 8.5 million.

So it’s a FACT PS3 is still out selling the 360, but where the 360 had a min-12 months head start, the PS3 is having to play catch up.

    Sony PS2: 5.6
    Sony PS3: 10.8
    Microsoft Xbox 360: 8.5

With the fiscal year not ending until March 31st, there is still a lot of time and sales to be done.

the PS3 isnt STILL outselling the 360, this is the first year it has done so.

its no surprise, as the PS3 launched the Slim and had its first big price cut. sales are back to the normal for the PS3 now, so 2010 will be a more interesting sales battle. although when Natal comes out the 360 will have a HUGE increase in sales to the casual gamers.

Sales don’t tell you the full picture of what is better and what is not. The Wii outsells both, but is it the better console? SABC have the most viewers, but is it the best TV station? Corolla might be the best selling car but is it the best?

The Xbox’s sales might have been great, but it is by no means the best console. In fact when you put everything into perspective like quality games, quality hardware etc etc, it comes stone last, with only the highly overrated LIVE being the ace card – which I might add is a cesspit of foulmouthed kids – I should know I’ve been part of it for over 2 years.

Since getting the PS3 a few months ago, I can without a doubt say it IS the best console around, and my fellow Crapbox buddies and sing and cry and moan until they get RRoD, but it doesn’t change that fact.

The PS3 in the same time scale has sold consoles faster then the 360. When the PS3 came out the 360 had approx 10 million consoles head start yet NOW theres not even 5 million difference. So in the same time span the PS3 has been out selling the 360 console.

Now as you well know, myself and people on here have had RROD, and i know for a fact that people who’s console was not under warranty re-bought a 360 console, after the MASS BAN MS done on consoles, people went out a re-bought another console, MS Sale’s figures mean sod all when you take HOW the 360 sold it’s consoles. I would say that MORE PS3 consoles are owned by people than the 360, due to multi-sales the 360 sold through faults or bans.

The PlayStation 3 went beyond expectations this year when it managed to keep momentum going from way back in September (if you consider that way back). Currently, the PS3 has outsold the Xbox 360 in January and is at over 1.47 million units for 2010.

The 360, on the other hand, has just come past the 1 million mark, sealing the PS3 lead in 2010 by just under 500,000 units.

The exclusives popping up every month might have played a role in the PS3’s lead so far in 2010. Despite heavy hitters on the 360 such as Mass Effect 2, it continues to trail Sony’s console in Europe.

Luckily for Microsoft, their console manages to stay ahead of the PS3 in it’s native land, North America. As always, the PS3 represented for Japan, selling over 30,000 units last week compare to the mere 2,500 on the 360, even outselling Nintendo’s Wii.

Total sales for last week are at an estimated 192,181 for PS3 and 161,400 for 360. 2010 continues to see the PS3 as the leading console above the 360, and has since stayed at an approximated 500,000 unit lead.

While it’s definitely possible that a change could happen within the next 8 to 9 months, it does not look like a turnaround for the 360 could happen this March.

February is showing that it’s without a doubt an exponentially slow month for both consoles, but the leading console* for this month is currently the PS3 with close to 550,000 units. The 360, while close to it, has yet to reach 500,000 units, giving the PS3 a lead of over 50,000. It wouldn’t be surprising if you see the PS3 take February 2010 by the end of the month, especially with Heavy Rain at the end of it.

Whether or not the Xbox 360 has a chance to take over the PS3 for 2010 is still up for grabs. If things go the way they are now, this might be a bigger challenge than Microsoft anticipated

PS3 is STILL outselling the 360. It’s not a case of how long will it take but when the PS3 out sells it.
