Vampyr

I have a bit of an unnatural love for the now defunct Troika Games’ Vampire – The Masquerade: Bloodlines. When I was younger and more sullen, I had a fascination with bloodsuckers and the mythos surrounding them – well before Stephanie Meyer made me wish I could dropkick sparkly vampires right in to the sun.

It was the first game I’d played that actually captured what it really felt to be one of those creatures of the night; the good and the deplorable bits – including feeding off of humans, and getting mixed up some seriously seedy stuff. It’s one reason I’ve been so keen to see more of Vampyr, the new RPG from the folks behind Remember Me and Life is Strange Dontnod.

We don’t really know much about the game beyond its setting though; “set in early 20th century Britain as the country is gripped by the lethal Spanish flu and the streets of London are crippled by disease, violence and fear. In a disorganized and ghostly city, those foolish, desperate, or unlucky enough to walk the streets lay prey to Britain’s most elusive predators: the vampires. “

Sounds good to me. And it sounds even better, thanks to an info blast on the game over at the PlayStation Blog.

Philippe Moreau, gameplay director on the game explained a little more about the game.

“Vampyr is an action RPG with tight, visceral combat mechanics, exploration, and investigation – you’ll have to collect many clues, and talk to many people as you prowl the streets of London,” he says.

“With the use of vampiric powers – as you’d expect! – and authentic ‘make-shift’ weapons, such as a saw (our protagonist is a surgeon, after all!) you’ll be fighting both mythical terrors and human foes.”

What makes it really interesting to me, is that apparently every single one of the game’s NPCs could be a target of your vampyric cravings, which could change the way the game plays out.

“But each kill will have consequences on the fragile streets of London,” Moreau says. “You’ll both see those consequences, and feel them. They’ll have an effect on the story, often immediately, and in the long-run.”

And killing is something you’ll have to do; there’s just no getting around that.

Killing innocent people is unfortunately the price of immortality. Besides, in the eyes of a vampire, how do you define innocent? You’ll have to kill people, that’s for sure… but how do you decide who? The information you gather, the things that you see, and the relationships your nurture will all define your decisions. But you will have to feed. You cannot escape that you are a vampire.

If it’s even half as good as Bloodlines, it’ll be an amazing game – and I really can’t wait to see the game in action.

Blasphemy! Using half my name, with incorrect spelling, in vain!

I’m not an expert on the seven thing. Let’s ask the expert?

(also yes, you are correct, this splitting headache is messing up my day, going home now)

I blame this heat. 37C to 20C to 37C to 20C is not helping matters along

Technically seven eighths is closer to six sevenths than your initial “half”
We both failed, time to go home

technically three sevenths would be correct because they misspelled Vampyre

exactly half is 3.5/7 so would you prefer 3.4/7?

Well, a vampyre is a mortal vampire. So hopefully they called this game Vampyr just because they thought it sounded cool and had no idea about the connotation. Otherwise it might suck (excuse the pun), if you try something vampirey and die from it. 😉

Yeah, that’s also true… maybe they dunno what a vampyre is? *shrug* They still misspelled it though.

I’m liking what I’m reading about this RPG. Especially considering that the protagonist is a doctor. It creates an interesting dynamic. Someone who has sworn to do all he can to save lives, now put into a position where he must take lives.
That, and bloody bloody suck suck is always fun!

I liked Redemption. Because I was a bit younger when I played it, and it was the original Vampire: The Masquerade game it just holds more nostalgic value to me.

Pff. All you muggles know about the Vampire Masquerade Universe is: Bloodlines. It’s one of the more watered down bits of the Vampire The Masquerade franchise. Mark Rein-Hagen’s World of Darkness shaped so much of the vampire stories from 1991, it’s incredible.

It took some special tactics to rent some of those old vampire movies back then at a time when everyone thought the devil would enter your body if you watched them.

Lost interest after “Action RPG” this usually denotes more action than RPG.

I love my ARPGs. IF they are actually ARPGs. And not this new idea that an FPS game with RPG elements is somehow an RPG.
