“Kill the F*ggot” is an actual game on Steam Greenlight

[Update] The game’s been removed from Greenlight. Sanity prevails!

Steam’s Greenlight is a mess. While there may be the odd gem, it’s usually buried under a pile of trash; poor excuses for games that should even be made, let alone released. Greenlight is in very, very serious need of something resembling quality control. Few games make the need quite as clear as this bit of digital hate speech, called “Kill the faggot.”

A game made, I imagine, for controversy’s sake, “Kill the faggot” invites you to try your hand at “unleashing your frustration” with the LGBT community by “killing homosexuals and transgenders” while avoiding killing “straight people.”

I’m all for satire, freedom of expression and art – but this isn’t any of those. It’s pure, unadulterated hate speech, and shouldn’t have even made it to Greenlight, where it’s currently awaiting your votes.

Like Hatred, it’s there for scandal’s sake – but Hatred at the very least seems like an actual game buried under egregious and wanton violence. There are a number of countries where releasing this would be a criminal offense.

And I get that, as a title made for the inevitable public outcry, we’re playing right in to the developer’s hands for even talking about it. Hopefully though, we can get it removed from Greenlight. I will almost always champion a creator’s right to make the games they want to make, but this is pure hate speech masquerading as something that attempts – but fails – to be satire. You can report this mess on its Greenlight page.

Here’s Jim Sterling talking about the game

And if you’re not a fan of Sterling, a straight up trailer.

What? What bunch of losers sat and coded this poor excuse for sensational shit? I think we should punish them by getting them to code a new series of ‘Final Beiber’ where final means 65 titles. Jerks.

It’s no secret I’m a gay man myself. You’re gonna think I’m insane, but I actually found it vaguely amusing.

It’s obviously trying so hard to troll and be controversial that it wanders deep into absurdist territory. I’m not offended, honesty. But I also don’t believe it looks like a good game. Apart from the shock value, I don’t expect many people would really want to buy it. The developers are just pushing to see how far they can go.

To them, I say, “thanks for the laugh!”

A bad joke at least has a punchline. It may not BE funny. But the form of the joke adheres to likewise things we understand to be jokes. Jokes, then, have internal systems which we understand. This is just outright hate. I’d bet even the Tea Party would cringe if they saw this.

I imagine if they ever tried to make another game this will be brought up and they would lose a lot of potential customers.

        It’s still not enough though.
Others might try to copy them and troll with another similiar game.

I have already trashed them on my facebook (and their page pending approval, but doubt that’s going to happen). I plan to keep tabs on the next game they make and make sure I remind people about just who they are thinking about buying a game from. They seem to be putting a lot of time into “The Shelter”. So any bad press there will hurt them once they go to Greenlight or retail. I’m hoping that when they release it enough people do the same. There should really be significant consequences for putting out a title this downright inhumane. It’s honestly really fucking disgusting. There better be some form of an apology and someone needs to get fired.

            I don’t know.

I don’t want to hurt anybody or ruin their chances of success, even if they are total douche bags. If they are indeed trolling, well, kudos to them for succeeding what they aimed to do, and that was offending people.

If they’re aiming to be serious developers, perhaps we can convince them to offer something that showcases their skills rather than their lack of taste.

If that’s how they honestly feel about gay people, well, fine, they’re entitled to their opinions. Maybe one day they’ll move on and see that such attitudes won’t get them far in life. If that happens, I’ll be curious to see what else they come up with.

I just think that if they’re entitled to their opinions, then I’m entitled to showcase how narrow minded and bigoted they are on every form of media I can find that showcases their products.

            “Serious” developers. Lol.

Well I’m posting on every Steam Greenlight game they have there, or anything they publish anywhere. I’ve already had my posts deleted on their Facebook page and they’ve banned me from making more. Clearly they don’t want the <200 people who "like" them thinking they're the biggest wankers under the sun.

But I'm now active on their youtube etc to spread the word that these people are the worst kind of scum.

Greenlight is loaded with crappy games, some offensive games too… this takes the cake.

That said, it’s my view that you don’t address things like homophobia by pretending they don’t exist. LET someone make an offensive statement, go right ahead… and let that become a forum for discussion about the problem. Ideas aren’t cooties, no one’s going to become homophobic because of this game. But reactions to the game may help STOP homophobia, may out people who are homophobes, and gives the community fair warning.

Silencing them outright just means they exist in the shadows and never have their voices challenged in public debate.

THAT said, I’m pretty sure this game was in violation of basic Steam Greenlight rules in the first place.

People kill themselves over things most people would say is “little” this may have made LGBT people self harm, or even kill themselves. To end this sh*t we need to show that there is a deathtoll when you do this sort of thing. People get murdered or kill themselves for being LGBT.

Isn’t it a tad hypocritical to hate this game’s content, yet fully endorse torturing virtual people in the sims, or killing random people in GTA.

The main difference is that in this game you are being rewarded for targetting a specific culture of people which appear in real life. games like COD and GTA have you targetting the enemy who is always seen as bad

If you think that’s bad, don’t ever play any game online that has voice or text chat. The online gaming communities are rife with virtual racists and homophobes and their behavior is rarely policed.
