Kinect blows passed the 2.5 million mark… still a long way to hitting 5 million by the end of year

Microsoft are announcing this morning that Kinect retail sales have now passed 2.5 million and that they are still on track to reach 5 million by the end of the year.

The 2.5 million is worldwide sales, not shipped, and is pretty impressive when you think the device has only been on sale for 25 days. But I have to say that I am a little wary of them repeating that number in the next 25 days with Black Friday now being out of the way and the recession in Europe and America still hurting the average consumer.

But if I recall correctly there was a little bet going on in the comments about the Kinect not selling well and now someone is owed a licking but for this one I think we’ll take your word on it, no pics required.

REDMOND, Wash. — Nov. 29, 2010 — Microsoft Corp. today announced that strong demand over the Black Friday weekend has propelled retail sales of Kinect for Xbox 360 to more than 2.5 million units worldwide since it launched just 25 days ago.

“We are thrilled about the consumer response to Kinect, and are working hard with our retail and manufacturing partners to expedite production and shipments of Kinect to restock shelves as fast as possible to keep up with demand,” said Don Mattrick, president of the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft. “With sales already exceeding two and a half million units in just 25 days, we are on pace to reach our forecast of 5 million units sold to consumers this holiday.”

“Kinect on Xbox 360 was a top performer at Target this weekend,” said Nik Nayar, vice president, merchandising, Target. “We expect Kinect will be a must-have gift this holiday season, so Target will continue to receive consistent shipments of Kinect throughout December. The hands-free, active gaming experience that Kinect offers is something that everyone in the family can enjoy.”

Kinect is now available at more than 60,000 retailers in 38 countries. It is the only controller-free games and entertainment system available that lets you control games, movies, music and television with gestures and your voice. Retailers, reviewers and analysts are calling it a must-have gift this holiday season.

By long way do you mean less than half way to go with Xmas still to come and having passed the halfway mark in 25 days where people doubted they’d even reach the initially projected 3 million mark?

I never doubted the 3 million mark but selling another 2.5 million in the same time period is going to be tough since the first 2.5 included day one sales and Black Friday..

    but we’ll see

They are doing very well, people are now seeing Kinect for themselves in person and they like what they are see. and seeing Kinect in action and word of mouth is far more reliable than beliving the “bull on the net” a good example of this is the recent “Sony engineer lashes Kinect” RUBBISH……

That’s actually on par with the PS Move. It’s interesting, when PS Move sold 2.5 million in 30 days, it was called an embarrassed to Sony. Kinect does the same, and the figures are hailed as revolutionary (regardless of the $500 million advertising budget).

It does seem that Kinect is slowing down. It did 1 million in 10 days (which was insane), and then took 20 days to do 1.5 million, although Christmas is still on the cards, and they might actually reach their 5 million mark by the end of the year.

And yes, the figures are actually shipped to retailers. In other words, 2.5 million units shipped to retailers, with an undisclosed amount ultimately picked up by consumers. Microsoft does not have a facility to measure “sold to consumers”.

No, I’m not being a fanboi, it’s a well known fact that they (Microsoft) use the terms shipped and sold interchangeably, but it all means the same thing (Sold to Retailers).

Here’s my least fanboyish response to that bobby, shipped =/= sold. Major Nelson said that they have SOLD over 2.5 million to CONSUMERS. SONY on the other hand SAID SHIPPED.
Sold at retail vs sold to retail. Learn the difference and you won’t make such ignorant comments…*fanboy cap back on*

With the help of black friday last week, kinect has now sold . . .what does that say to you? If these were shipped numbers then they wouldn’t need the help of black friday, they would have announced them before black friday.

Ndibu has a point, Ship does not equal sold… comparing Move to Kinect is something one has to do accurately Move is like three different components were as the the Kinect is one unit. then theres the pricing aswell, in the long run the Kinect has done booming biznis for a device that was regarded by many as the “emperor’s new suit.”

Actually, whenever Nintendo, Sony or Microsoft releases sales, it’s safe to assume that they all mean shipped to retailers (unless it’s figures released at the end of a financial quarter or cites reports from retailers).

Regardless, 2.5 million sold to retailers, means that Microsoft has made a sale, and at $149 (or probably $100-$110 as a wholesale cost), that’s still a decent amount of money to be made of a peripheral (especially if the production cost of the unit was under $50).

Whether the retailers sell all their stock is immaterial to the fact, that Microsoft has already made it’s money.

I’m not surprised that Kinect has sold so many units in less than a month. In my opinion, it’s quite a huge success, considering it’s approx. 4x more expensive than the Move.
