Latest Gran Turismo 5 Demo – Awkward Damage Pics, Video

People in the US have been rushing out to Best Buy stores to try out the Gran Turismo 5 demo stands that have been setup, and a lot of them made sure to take some sort of camera with.

Reports have been coming out far and wide of the new demo featuring the updated damage system, and after looking at a first set of shots, I was really impressed. After seeing a second set of shots I started noticing something rather awkward and strange.

Hit the jump for the pics.

Let’s start with the good. I saw some great shots that showed off some very impressive damage:

gt5damage4.jpg

   gt5damage4.jpg

In the next set of pics that made their way onto the net, the story changed a little. The person who posted the shots firstly said that while some cars were showing massive damage, others cars barely changed at all.

The damage is apparently designed to work in “real-time” and instead of pre-made models, actually crumples the car model for added realism. The only problem is, I’ve never seen cars that look like this after an accident. Here’s a video running that shows the very out-of-place looking damage, as well as pics:

gt5damage1.jpg

gt5damage3.jpg

GT5damage2.jpg

I noticed this trend of a strange corrugated effect, not to mention that it just plain doesn’t make sense compared to the placement of other elements, such as the car grill. The game isn’t out yet, so we already know that more work is probably going to happen and most probably has already happened since this demo was put together.

That said, the release date isn’t so far off, so if anything is going to be done, it had better be done very soon. It still intrigues me that so much of a fuss is being made out of Gran Turismo 5’s damage model, considering that most games these days include it as a standard (even Mafia II’s cars had an impressive damage model).

I think the major issue here, is that no other game looks quite as incredible as Gran Turismo, so when it comes down to things like damage, any imperfections are going to stick out like a sore thumb.

  1. eish man that’s baaaad how can a game take this long and still not be ready i would’ve thought that they would iron out the damage model first as that’s what adds to the fear experience of crashing the car

mmm, the damage on the Ferrari looks very strange, but I guess simulating the damage on the body work of a car is hardly an easy task. One of my friends used to do computer modeling and simulation of damage due to blasting on a metal plate, and even that gave her headaches.

@Steve This isn’t a train smash though, and no reflection on the game itself, but I guess if you’re only buying GT5 for the “realistic damage modeling and simulation”, then (a) you’re potentially a sick puppy, who wants to destroy pretty things or (b) probably a sadist that enjoys throwing puppies into rivers or (c) a member of the ANC (i.e. suffering from severe mental retardation).

    I’m just saying… 😛

    “…the release date isn’t so far off…”
First it has become possible for this sentence to be uttered, then we find out Duke Nukem Forever is alive. I feel like we’re in the Twilight zone!

As for the damage modelling… it’s probably an early build, but really, if you’re going to bitch and moan about something that’s so negligible then you need to get out some more (maybe crash a car yourself). I’m seriously going to lol when this game is bashed for little shit like this and Forza ends up with higher scores.

I thought that Forza 3 was a phenomenal racer, especially due to its creative and community features. That said, I really don’t see Gran Turismo failing to top it, it’s gonna be damn good. After playing it at E3 and getting a proper feel of the new driving physics and so on, I’m counting the minutes till its release. I still hope this damage business gets sorted though, some of those images look like the car was attacked with a giant tin opener.

Oh, I wasn’t criticizing Forza in any way. I probably would have gotten it except I own a 360 Arcade, so I feel the money would have been a bit wasted. I have played it though, and I loved it to bits, far eclipsing Shift, GRID, etc.

But the way I see it, with GT5 we’re already getting much more than we’re paying for. It’s like getting a birthday present and complaining about it, if you get what I’m saying.

…and they say the damage is “real time”

Then why does it look like in all of the pictures above that the bumpers is skew from left slanting upwards to the right. Should it not be random and unique for all?

for Lans: By left to right I mean if you sit in the car and not looking at the picture from the front.

To me that doesn’t look realtime at all, it just looks like if you hit something it will change the angle of the bumper and add a cool wave to it.

Pretty poor really but like Nick said it is possible they will sort that out before it’s release

Ians, you know that I support GT as well, but you have to admit, the damage looks “very strange”, and not to mention that there doesn’t seem to be any windscreen damage (which definitely doesn’t make any sense).

I can therefore assume that the damage could merely be cosmetic. I was hoping that the damage to the outside of the body would also be reflected accurately to the chassis as well (i.e. buckle the chassis, and your wheel alignment gets shot etc.).

@sir games, kaz did speak of interior damage, but we have never seen it, we have not seen weatherd either, so we just gonna have to wait, till its released i suppose.

I was not saying the damage is awesome, but i think its enough, they never promised us a crash simulator so i dont see why they have to implement a feature most people will turn off anyways.

There is mechanical damage, its been stated numerous times, but we have not seen it, or its difficult to see. its stated in there features list for premium and standard cars.

its not always good to judge videos because most of the time, polyphony works on their stuff in stages so we never see the full picture until the end, im no more gonna read gt news coz it seems like flame bait and i might beat someone up for real, so im gonna stop following gt news for a while, i dont need convince anyone, if people prefer, other games then so be it

another thing forza 3’s damage also looks like ass, but according to you its the best game ever with no flaws even with the long loading times! you never mentioned anything about the damage, its not like gt boasted about damage, it said it was adding it for the first time !, its all the fanboys that got excited, but i dont think this damage is shit at all, at least it follows some physics system, plus you conveniently ignore the fact that polyphony said that premium cars panels and etc detach and fall off, which is obviously not happening here! which you fail to point out! obviously meaning that this damage build is incomplete but the forza fanboy in you immediately assumes this is the final build and gt5 damage is shit, so the whole game must be shit?

what more do you want, they should us a damage build people complained they made it better, people wanted skidmarks they put it in, they wanted reverse lights they put it in, people wanted more smoke they put it in, they even added hooters and the ability to flash slower cars ahead of you what more do you want! there is no other developer who would do that to you!

It is a game with cars as the main characters. I expect such a game to at least have paid some attention to damage detail. I can play games where I shoot the legs off enemies and they start crawling to me. If you can do that in a 2 year development cycle I am sure you can develop a damage model to your main character being cars in this case.

@ lans: If you are so serious about this game as a simulator why do you switch off damage? That is like playing your favourite game at casual difficulty. It makes no sense.

At a press conference Thursday at the Toyko Game Show, Gran Turismo 5 Developer Kazunori Yamauchi disclosed additional features so far unrevealed by the E3 2010 and GamesCom 2010 conferences.

First up is a series of new tracks and cars. Laguna Seca Oh My God!, Trial Mountain Oh My God!, and Circuit de la Sarthe Oh My GOd! may all be familiar to racing buffs — but the cars are a bit strange. The Kübelwagen, Schwimmwagen Oh MY GOd!, Samba Bus, and 4200R are all technically “old” cars developed years ago — but maybe people haven’t ever seen them. Additionally, Kazunori also revealed the GT by Citroën R, Oh My God!

Kazunori briefly touched on the game’s special-events system using a live demo of Rally Mode. In this dirt-track mode, the courses are generated dynamically right when you load into the course Oh My God!. A navigator calls out turns, or you can use a course-overlay view to track turns. Like a real-life rally race, times are cumulative, and other cars get to start first.

Lastly, Kazunori revealed the Dynamic Weather Changes system. For courses where applicable (like the endurance run courses), a “forecast” set by the developer creates conditions for weather events to occur Oh my God!. For example, a course my be “partially cloud” and then during the race, the player may experience rain or sleet. The effects of weather create real road challenges, like a slick road at night that reflects lights oddly or a dry desert course with sand blowing in front of the windshield Oh MY GOD!. Kazunori said this is a feature that’ll probably be more for the hardcore than the casual racer.

    OH MY GOD
MY APOLOGIES *100 to you know who i dont do this too often and im a pretty good guy
