Pentakill

League of Legends has a fantastic collection of skins for each champion. One of the sets includes the Pentakill set, a grouping of heavy metal skins to create a band. And now that band is releasing an album, and it’s actually pretty good.

Pentakill‘s front man is the singer, Karthus. Of course he is supported by Mordekaiser on guitar, Olaf on drums, Sona on keyboard and Yorick on bass guitar – you just know he’s gonna get all the ladies. Their first album, Smite and Ignite, releases 3 June 2014, but the debut single off the album, Lightbringer, is already available:

Just check out that screen shake on the music video, it must be metal!

Pentakill has a dual meaning in League of Legends. Sure, it can refer to this band, but it’s also what the announcer says if one player manages to kill every other champion, wiping out the other team. It’s quite an impressive feat, and makes the band seem even more hardcore.

The actual vocalist on the album is Jørn Lande, a Norwegian heavy metal singer who has provided the vocals for Masterplan, Ark, Beyond Twilight, Millennium, Vagabond and the Snakes (among others). His vocals are seriously OP for League of Legends.

I like what Riot is doing with this. Yes, everyone I know who plays LoL keeps saying they wish that instead of releasing new champions or creating bands Riot would invest in their servers. With millions of players, there are often server issues and South Africa could certainly use a server of their own. Although, that said, it’s only by playing international players that our locals learn new things and improve their MOBA skills. Yes, Riot should certainly pump a large portion of their revenue into servers, but I seriously enjoy this metal release. I’ve loved the Pentakill skins for a while now, and I’m glad it’s going beyond just cosmetic skins now.

The Music is derivative at best, Lande’s voice is the only remarkable feature… This is no Power Metal!
