Legacy of Kain multiplayer spinoff Nosgoth has been cancelled

In vampire school, I learned that if you go up against a group of evil clowns, you should always go for the juggler.

Hey! Remember that online, competitive multiplayer Legacy of Kain Spin-off, Nosgoth? The free-to-download game that pit humans against vampires has been in early access for about a year now. While it’s free to play, it requires realworld cash to buy heroes.

Developed by a company you’d not have heard of in 2013, but is very much one you know of now, Nosgoth was being developed by Rocket League developer Psyonix.

“It has been more than two and a half years since we partnered with the wonderfully mad men and women at Psyonix to embark upon a rather ambitious adventure. Our goal was to bring the world of Nosgoth to life in a new and challenging manner; a manner which allowed players to wage asymmetric warfare against each other as both human and vampire-kind.”

The idea seemed sound enough, even if it capitalised on players’ nostalgia. Nostalgia isn’t enough though – because it’s been canned.

“This was not an easy decision to come to,” says a statement that was posted to the Square Enix forum. “It has been a pleasure to build this game with your help, but ultimately its audience hasn’t grown enough to sustain ongoing operations.”

Nosgoth enters the underworld on 31 May 2016. If you’re still playing it, you’ll be able to do so so until that date, but you’ll no longer be able to buy anything. Any purchases made since March 1 will be refunded as well.

The big question then, is what happens to the once beloved Legacy of Kain franchise, and the fate of its spinoffs like Soul Reaver?

“Any future Legacy of Kain project will be considered independently of Nosgoth and on the merits of the proposals alone,” Square Enix said.

As you’d imagine, the fervent community of engaged players is pretty damned furious about it all right now, saying player feedback (which is vital for an in-development, Early Access game) was never taken in to consideration.

So people spent money on a game that was still in early access? Genius! Publishers should just leave their games in Early Access, make it F2P and charge MT for it.

I will and do support Early Access, but there needs to be stronger regulations around it, that’s all.
I’ve supported some games from Early Access and it’s been worth way more than buying a “completed” game from a “Triple A” company. I’ll continue to do so into the future because the indie market is the only place where creativity still exists at this stage.

Regulations is the key word, but one just need to look at Jim Sterlings Youtube channel to see that there are essentially almost none

Yea, there are very few, that’s a problem. No denying that.
I’ve been burnt with early access once and I’ve been burnt once with crowdfunding as well.
But for all the other times I’ve only been happy to play as the game continue to grow and develop. And it’s nice to see customer suggestions coming up in the games too.

Even though I was a huge fan of Legacy of Kain, my stance on multiplayer/always online games remains…. —> Multiplayer/Always-online games can go suck a fat donkey’s dong (especially the f2p varieties).

While I fully agree, there are exceptions.
Warframe being one of those exceptions.

Legacy of Kain was great because of what it was. I don’t see the nostalgic value in this game.
    It’s not anything like it.

But just like with Deus Ex, Square can tap into our nostalgia.Imagine if they announced a new Kain game tomorrow . People would go berserk

I would be a bit excited, to say the least.

The Nosgoth community is still fighting for this unpolished gem of a game! It is unique, there is no other game like it on the market right now and we are dedicated to this game.

We have started a petition to request that we be able to host private servers at least.

Please help us with out plight! We need as many people as possible.
