I’m a big fan of the Compendium. For only a handful of (American) bucks, I can help build the prize pool of The International, and I score a bunch of awesome in-game goodies in the process. Know what’s a pain though? Levelling the damn thing up. To unlock the higher tier rewards, I either have to throw more money at Valve and outright purchase levels, or I can spend countless hours crying, trying to make correct predictions or fulfil challenges (dammit I’m out of rerolls and have Wisp/IO). Now Valve have really gone and thrown a spanner in the works.
A new chest has been released – the Collector’s Cache. Here’s Valve’s description of it:
Available for purchase exclusively to Compendium owners, the International 2015 Collector’s Cache costs $1.99 and gives you another chance to contribute to The International prize pool as you claim 11 community-created, Mythical sets. The Cache also has a 1 in 250 chance to contain the Immortal Faceless Rex courier. The Collector’s Cache will only be sold until the end of The International.
Opening a Collector’s Cache also gives you several ways to increase your Compendium level. The first time you open a Cache will earn you 2 levels, when you open 5 Caches you’ll earn 5 levels, and you’ll earn 11 levels when you open 11 Caches. There’s also a chance that a Cache will contain an item that grants 11 Compendium levels. Additionally, each set from the Collector’s Cache can be recycled for two levels.
It’s yet another way to spend money to level up your compendium. Typical Valve, looking to steal all my money! I would honestly be stomping all over this right now, calling it a shameless cash-grab, were the sets on offer not this spectacular.
Seriously, I haven’t been this impressed by a chest in all my Dota 2 years. There are sets for Doom, Juggernaut, Medusa, Spectre, Vengeful Spirit, Tusk, Dragon Knight, Rubick, Necrophos, Windranger, and Skywrath. Also, FACELESS REX COURIER GIMME GIMME!

This feels much better. Instead of spending $10 on 25 levels, I spent it on 5 sets and got 15 levels as a bonus. Thanks Valve! Wait… did I just spend cash on Dota 2 again, and justify it? Y U DO DIS GABEN?

Nope. Didn’t even get the bonus points. My gf bought 4 chests and got a points drop. She’s also so far gotten both golden items from the immortal treasures, and hasn’t gotten all the normal items. Meh. My luck sucks.
