Licensing issues preventing Xbox UI live demo

Yesterday, Geoff showed you a pretty video of what Xbox UI navigation will be like. It’s not a live demo, but a video representation of what we can expect. So, why haven’t seen a live demo of the UI?

When Albert Penello linked to the video calling it a good look at the dash and how it works, twitter went wild, asking why it’s a video and not a live demo. Penello explained:

Hm, logistics and licensing issues? Now I’m curious. What will be on the dash that causes licensing issues? Is Pizza Hut clamping down on the use of their food porn images? Surely a giant like Microsoft can secure some license agreements that let them show off the UI – in a month’s time people will have their own Xbox Ones and can screen capture the UI to their heart’s content. What’s the problem with doing it now? Although, that said, Xbox already had a superior UI, and I doubt that UIs really sell that many consoles. Sony had to show off a live demo of their UI to prove that it was improved. I’m not sure Xbox has much to prove in this battle.

Will us South Africans also have to endure American Advertising spread across our dash board or will it be ” SPUR proud sponsor of your digital film”… that only works if you have a 2mb line or more.

I’m calling shenanigans. Surely this close launch they should be able to show off a live demo?
With respect to licensing, they must be able to swap in some sample microsoft ads instead of real ones.

    Seems very fishy to me.
I think I will hold off buying the console until I can actually test it myself in store.
I’ll bet you anything that there also won’t be review consoles available before launch.

It just irks me so much. Why can’t they just be honest and open with their customers.

GAF’s actually of the opinion that the issue lies deeper, that there are issues with the OS itself. It makes sense given the harsh 180 they were forced to make by removing all the DRM. If you think about it, the DRM/Online Activision was an integral part of how the XBone would work, so to remove it, wouldn’t just be a case of deleting a few code entries. It means an overhaul and in some cases a re-write of key processes. That might also be why, the bone is supposedly launching with the bare-minimum of features.

What makes the GAF rumours so worrying is that the guys who leaked the OS issues are the same lads who have been spot on about everything so far, from the initial DRM issue to even Resolutiongate (720 yo). You don’t have to believe CBOAT and the rest, but they have had a very good track record with this.

In any case, I think this next gen is going to popcorn-tastic!

Could be so kind as to share a link to the neogaf thread you speak of?

You are correct, I think the internet is going to explode on launch.
I think I’ll happily sit back and continue to enjoy FTL and carry on my piss-poor attempt to clear out my various gaming backlogs.

How does that saying go again…”Some people just want to watch the world burn” 😉

This was over the weekend so the thread itself is now swimming in the neogaf abyss, but if you scroll down the gaming section, you might stumble upon it. There’s a couple new ones that I haven’t read (spotted some juicy ones this morning) so who knows more nuggets of interest?

Ah yes, the neogaf abyss. I’d rather not wade through that 😉

Found this with some quick googling. Seems to be written by same guys from GAF.

With all these rumours and Microsoft’s PR faux pas, it’s seems pretty clear that they were not ready for launch and just had to react to Sony.
I’d guess that they’re probably around 6 months off.

Hell, I don’t even think that Sony are entirely ready, what with their day one patch to enable some features.
Have they showed off a live demo of their dashboard yet? Other than the GDC demo?

They really should have waited till 2014. A year actually doesn’t matter, especially if you have a product that people want. I mean if SONY could claw back after a string of failures with the PS3 to eventually overtake the 360, then Microsoft could have done the same with the bone.

I blame their management and shareholders though.
