Lobo is getting his original look back for a new Justice League of America series

Lobo (5)

When you need a dirty job done with no fuss whatsoever in your corner of the galaxy, you hire the main man. You call in Lobo, the last Czarnian alive after he annihilated his own species just for bragging rights, a son of a bastich who can track down any man alive or dead if your price is right. And this time, Lobo is ditching his New 52 look for some good ol’ biker leathers and actual muscles mass as he joins the ranks of the Justice League of America.

Yup, the main man is returning to his roots, and it’s about frakkin’ time. If you recall, a couple of years ago Lobo was sporting a much more slender design while DC did its very best to try and convince fans that this Czarnian was still a badass:

Lobo-52

Fans weren’t buying it of course, and the character was quickly pushed aside to darker corners of the DC Universe in the process. And that’s a bloody shame. Lobo’s distinctive look isn’t exactly hard to nail down, thanks to a soft reboot that saw his first costume (a lavender and orange jumpsuit) ditched for more practical gear.

Space biker leathers, big muscles and a nasty chain that complemented his ultra-violent personality made the character shine, and still look fantastic to this day. And that’s the look that Lobo will be sporting next year in a new Justice League of America series that finds the main man joining forces with Batman, Black Canary and Batman to help safeguard the globe. Speaking to IGN via io9 (and that swell fella Kharrak who clued me in during a game of Pathfinder), writer Steve Orlando explained that Lobo’s kill-happy attitude will be a bone of contention in the JLA:

Lobo (4)

Not to soften him, but to give him more depth because he’s still the hard partying, bullshit calling, bullshit calling especially, it’s what I love about him, but if anyone is there to remind them that they’re taking themselves too seriously to remind people that they’re hypocrites, it’s him. I mean, he’s on a team with Batman, he’s not going to exploding people’s brains all over the place, but that’s not to say that that’s not going to cause conflict and he’s not going to want to.

With Batman leading this new JLA team, expect a squad who live up to DC’s idea of what it truly means to be a hero today following the new status quo set in their Rebirth titles:

The places the Justice League of America go will be different because they’re tuned in to the different communities. They’re tuned into people that have never thought that they would see a superhero before, that they never thought they’d be thought of or heard by them. And besides the fact that they have a different face and a different roster, there’s an emotional quality that I think is different.

This is about reinvention. It’s about rebuilding and it’s about putting heroism out in this world that matches the needs of the world today. And we’re going to do that on every page as much as we possibly can.

The new Justice League of America series kicks off in February 2017. And just remember: Don’t mess with the space dolphins. Lobo gets really touchy about that.

“joining forces with Batman, Black Canary and Batman to help safeguard the globe” – Because Batman contributes so much he just has to get two mentions. Although some may argue that Batman IS the Justice League.
