We told you last week that Nintendo’s gone and done the unthinkable – globally reduced the price of its ailing flagship handheld, the 3DS. It makes a curious departure for the company, whose handhelds have traditionally been market leaders. Thanks to poor sales and slow momentum, Nintendo have been forced to drop the price of the 3DS, by as much as 40% in some territories. We’ve just gotten confirmation that we’ll be getting a similar price cut – and that the 3DS will begin retailing locally for just R1899, down R900 from its launch price of R2799.

The announcement was made public on Nintendo’s own website.

Nintendo has today announced a global change in the trade pricing policy of Nintendo 3DS. In South Africa, this will be applicable from August 12th.

Early adopters of the machine at full price would be enrolled in the “Ambassador Program,” that would see them get 10  NES games and 10 GBA games in the form of downloadable titles as a gesture of goodwill. Unfortunately for South Africans, enrolment is via Nintendo’s eShop, a service that’s not available locally – making it entirely possible that South Africans miss out entirely. We’ve contacted Nintendo for comment and a local resolution for those who paid full price for the 3DS, and will keep you abreast of ay developments.
