I went to the Make Games SA meet up last night in Joburg. It was a smaller turnout than normal, in a ridiculously freezing room, but it was all worthwhile because I saw a trailer that made me really psyched about a local game. I’ve already supported it on Greenlight, and after payday I’ll be throwing money at their Kickstarter. You should, too.
Tom Sparks and the Quakes of Ruin is:
a top-down action-adventure / shooter game with a healthy dose of exploration, platforming, puzzles and smashing things thrown in for good measure. We aim to create a game full of fast paced fire-fights and extraordinary weapons in a similar vein to console classics like Ratchet and Clank and Jak and Daxter. We hope to bring this vision to life in a vibrant and mysterious underground world with a thick Diesel Punk aesthetic and an adventurous storyline.
As if that weren’t enough, the aesthetic and gameplay is really reminding me of two indie favorites of mine: Bastion and Torchlight. No really, look at this trailer featuring a soundtrack by Sean Beeson.
Plus, if you’re unsure if you like the game, you can play the demo. On any platform. That’s right, you can grab the demo on Windows, Mac or Linux.
Tasty Poison Games are based out of Cape Town and have brought you other games like Dig! and Pocket RPG. Go show them some love on Greenlight and also head over to Kickstarter if you have some money to throw at this project.

This just proves that South Africa can produce proper game titles… Can’t we give this more exposure? O_o
I already tweeted and facebooked it all over, but we need to do more 😛

I fear this game is too publisher friendly/generic/safe that it will not get the kickstarter support. It’s seems very well made and with some good marketing it could do very well. But usually people seem to back projects that are a niche/daring/original.
