So I saw a story this morning asking why console games cost so much more PC games and movies.
Now this is a very valid subject but in a nutshell it’s because the console makers sell the hardware at a loss and make there money from loyalties on games. Where PC game developers don’t pay Dell or anything like that.
However Mark from Second Story Gamer has his own opinion…
Basically the reason for the high price of games is because people don’t think that cheaper games are very good… which makes absolutely no sense what so ever…
Not only that but he is also of the opinion that Sony is the only company who has made any effort to lower the price of hardware… That would be the company that is selling the most expensive console on the market?
So if your not doing to much this morning head on over and see if I completely missed the point…

Actually it’s true. Go to almost any picknpay and you’ll see a bargain bin of R50 games. All utter crap.

Actually some of those R50 games aren’t to bad, they are not as good as their bigger brethern but they are not bad at all. You do know the most common games are the cheaper ones like Peggle, Virtual Villagers etc…

Well there is a school of thought that says market perception of a product that is priced cheaply is that it is inferior. The ‘more it costs the better it is’ principle. In good times, high cost housing is a great example of this – sometimes instead of dropping the price, increasing it results in a sale.

Well Sony has been the most aggressive with price cuts to their system. Their console has lowered $200 in price. Microsoft or Nintendo can’t say that.

My question would be… have a look at the price of titles internationally, and locally. You will notice that the vendor’s bringing them in are the real reason for the high prices.
Unfortunately it has become a way of life in this country to rip the consumer a new one each day, by not having transparent pricing structures.
What we need is more people bringing titles in OUTSIDE of the traditional vendors. And i’m not talking about illegal games or copies, we simply need people who are more interested in the number of sales, than they are profiteering.
Recently Mr Video got in trouble for going up against one of our entertainment vendors. What makes them special? Because they have done it for so long? Bollocks, it’s because (like with any industry in this country), if true competition is seen, the traditional milking-machines that generate insane amounts of revenue, yet leave nothing in terms of real value for the consumer, will not be able to function as they always have….
…providing a service for an elite few, who actually don’t mind being ripped off, or more likely, don’t know any better.
